That's a couple of times a "recording" has been mentioned. Is this common practice, or might we possibly expect a new product in the future ?

This was a joke Ron - he was having a senior moment, LOL. When he was back for the second set he used that story as a 'cover'.

On Saturday after he did Carefree Highway I tried to holler "one more time Gord" but in my weakened state only the few souls near me caught it - but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

The concerts were being recorded. When and whether we might see a CD of Massey recordings remains a question, but it would be nice wouldn't it? Bob Doidge has been recording the Massey concerts for Gord for many years now.

Saying that the repeat of Carefree Highway was for recording purposes was a joke. But, since the concerts were being recorded, it made for a good excuse!

Use abbreviations or acronyms ... Wreck, DQ, SFAWN, etc ... works like a charm. Also, when you know what's coming next, you can often write down two at once (the most obvious these days being, ROD, Sundown (that one I don't abbreviate for some reason).

I have been writing down set lists for 30-something years, long before the internet or sharing. I'm not even sure why I started. It seemed part of the history of the event, and I could reread the set list and hear the concert again in my mind. I'd write down the set list, then when I got home it went into the drawer (box, pile) along with the ticket stubs and the program ... in some cases, never to be seen again until I moved.

Also, 3x5 cards work perfectly, with one set on each side. Then you aren't shuffling paper, and you don't need to bring anything to lean on as you write.

Note: if you aren't up front, it may be too dark to see what you're writing. Then you must either keep a finger at your place, so you don't write on top of the previous song, or use a pen light ... as you see, I have lots of experiience doing this!

Often you can know the song from his verbal intro, from the guitar he picks up (especially later in the show when you are down to just a few), from his shifting the capo on the 6 string (that means ODR or COTS), or from the first few chords (or sounds, as in Restless). Since you play guitar yourself, you'll probably find that you have written down the song before most of the audience knows what it is (ever notice the recognition applause by a handful of people upon the first few chords, and then the whole audience applauds when he starts the vocals and they all get it).

Taking down the set list is actually a lot of fun!

lol. and some times not even seen again during or following a move!
atleast your set list archives probably dont take up much space

i was just instructed to move some of my stuff from one room to another, it was mostly old VHS tapes (photos, etc too) of video making attempts prior to non-linear digital editing capabilities but there must be about 30 boxes containing 50+ tapes each, ridiculous

anyhow, back to the subject, although i dont look at GL setlists for a tour year until after Ive seen the show you guys are amazing and deeply thanked! I also love looking at the archive of reviews at waynes site when the opportunity knocks

I saw char taking shorthand at the last gig, and it seemed to include song intros and anecdotes also...I was gonna try swipe her little book, lol...like dsr said, val. char, jen, etc really have the knack for this...I did it once for a friend who couldnt attend a blue rodeo concert and by halftime i was totally stressed out and flustered...3 songs would go by and I had gotten so into the stage analysis that Id forgotten to take notes...it was like trying to recall my golf score after forgetting to jot down # of strokes for 3 or 4 holes, no clue, bad short term memory here...so thanks again to you folks

if children had wings was a great surprise for me, i loved that arrangement also...the intro hook was gone (not a big fan of steel or e-piano anyhow) and there were some wonderful other tweaks that had me hanging on every note and nook and cranny of the performance

song for winters night was best really tops, way to go Gord and having Heff doing the closing section vocal ooos on keyboard instead was really getting a big thumbs up here

the mix was great all night, terry was in superb form and in full character...Heffs keys were fortunately kept to minimum level in the mix of EMR and CRT...all the guys were terrific

if i were at the sound panel i would have just boosted Heffs lovely warm strings during the watchmans gone, as warm as i was at Massey, that section always still gives me goosebumps...looks like I missed out on hearing My little love from earlier tour set list but other than that, not a single regret performance wise - you guys are gonna have some great stuff to put into a Gord Museum one day..I know we all have our mini-shrines located on mantels or in boxes, drawers, closets throughout fan homes all over the world

Um, yes, I take down the intros and anecdotes too. It's a compulsion, I think! I like that he mentioned Bob Gibson (again) in his intro to CRT, since I do Bob's site too. In fact, it was because of Gord that I learned about Bob, since Gord credits him as an influence for both his 12 string guitar playing and for the song structure of CRT (and that's the reference he made on Saturday night: fast, slow, fast ...).

How did you like the fiddle sound Mike added in Alberta bound?

I got a good chuckle over your keeping finger in place comment! ...I wonder if folks are doing similar documenting of concert details these days using blackberrys or texting, agh

you read my mind, absolutely mesmerizing, that just gets more appealing every time!
previous tours I had thought it sounded a bit more like a harmonica, nice but inferior

a while back I gotta say i thought the sampled sound stuff was a bit cheesy (I am biased cos theres nothing i love more than an old clunky upright piano tone) and Id rather hear Terry guitar solos, preferable acoustic (such as Rather Press On) , in place of whatever exists on studio recordings but Ive been converted! ...Mike really has the feel happening, such a solid, reliable member of the orchestra... then again, which member is not, none

BTW one reason i really loved hearing Harmony in prior gigs was hearing Mike emulate the accordian, so sweet!

I am gonna check this thread later for any others piping in on the actual concert tidbits, the jam was wonderful but has received more airplay and comment than the GL gig itself, lol

This is so true, once again I feel that Im not alone with certain things in life. Gordon Lightfoot has touch many of us in ways, that it's almost unbelievable.

I have a Blackberry, but in my worst nightmare I wouldn't consider using it to take down a set list! My two thumbs typing is far slower than my old pen and paper writing - but some people do that. I believe that the Dylan set lists, historically called in by phone, are now often sent via Blackberry.

I was actually very tempted to take a few pictures with my Blackberry, but if there's a way to turn off the flash I haven't found it yet and I didn't want the flash going off in his eyes.

Maybe my "thumb typing" will have improved enough by next time for me to try it.

The other inhibitor is the 1.5 cents per kb that it costs for data in Canada (with my US AT&T account). So, a simple email that is maybe 20 kb costs 30 cents to send anywhere. That's not bad, but if you knew all the email I get you'd realize that I was looking at a $30 to $50 a day bill if I overused the Blackberry. I shut off some of my incoming mail (normally received via a forward which I turned off), and told the people who occasionally send me large files (Bill Hall with his wonderful mp3s) not to send me anything. Here's hoping my bill isn't too high. I'm afraid to look (it's online).

It was new to me too, and I loved it!

If somebody out there taped the concert and can send me that intro, I'd love to send it to Meridian Green (Bob's daughter). I did point her to the long comment by Gord in a recent interview online and I know she appreciated it.

My daughter who is almost 16 wrote down the setlist for the Friday show. And she remembers all the comments ?? (wow!). Unbeknownst to me she snuck all my CDs to the computer and made me a two disc set using her notes and gave it to me for my birthday, complete with cover art and song listings. Great stuff to play in the car and considering the source it's something I'll keep forever.
