Hey gang,
There have been many interesting tales told of our earliest memories of music, first GL albums bought, favorite artists other than GL, and so on.
I thought it might interesting to read about the first singles bought...whether it was a 45rpm, a cassette single or CD single and why that particular song was a standout for you ("it's got a good beat and I can dance to it" counts  ).
I can't post an example of my own, since I never bought a single anything in my life, but my older sister did...I remember a few good ones...
Three Dog Night's Joy to the World among them.
So, I'm looking forward to hearing your memories...

For me it was The Beatles "I Want to Hold Your Hand". 45 RPM, and boy, were they strange looking chaps.

I got the what, but I forgot the why. Which is....it was melodic, catchy, and testosterone was beginning to rear its unpredictable head. I believe the flip side was "I Saw Her Standing There".

Several CCR - don't remember which ones though.
Close to you - Carpenters
just because they were popular.
btw I will be seeing Three Dog Night, Grand Funk Railroad and Firefall Sunday....looking forward to it.

My first 45 single would have to be one of The Beatles, probably, 'She Loves You'? I have many Beatles singles still today. I thought they were simply the greatest thing on TV, Ed Sullivan, etc. My first LP, "Did She Mention My Name." Simply to have the song, 'Black Day In July.' The only Gordon Lightfoot song I knew. Boy did things change for me musicaly after listening to that album a few times.

In NYC, at least back in the day, all the jukeboxes were controlled by organized crime types (insert your favorite mob name). My school mate's Dad was peripherally connected somehow ? Anyway whenever they took all the older singles out of the jukeboxes they gave them to him. There were always lots of doubles and sometimes triples, etc. Those trickled down to me so I remember having all the hits from the 1964 - 1967 time frame in my collection. Sadly all long gone now. Plenty of Beatles and everything else.

Ah, I knew the Corfidians wouldn't let me down, testosterone, teenage heartbreak, finding out that brink actually went for what was popular, Partridge Family confessionals (I wasn't going to tell on you Michael) and mob connections...
not surprised to see the Beatles figuring prominently...interesting to see the George Harrison single in there...that was a catchy tune...

The first single I bought was Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" - as a 7 year old, I found the melody to be catchy.
Not to worry, Michael, I don't have any of their singles, but as a pre-teen, I did buy a couple Partridge Family albums - and still like some of the songs

Hi Janice, The Partridge Family had some great songs, that I still listen to on CD from time to time. David Cassidy sure knew how to belt out a tune. Great singer, as well as actor. AH! that brings me back to my school days... JJ.  :D

Yes, Laurel and Mike even though I can travel the road alone now - at one time I was the youngest (EGADS!) and trying so hard to be accepted so I went with what was popular. Then the hippie days took over and I did everything I could to be iconoclastic and finally in the end I figured out myself what I liked.
But! when I was young I never missed the Partridge Family. In secret of course. lol

I remember Firefall!!! But only because of Brink mentioning it, otherwise it never would have clicked. They were a fun 70s band. Thanks for that, B. :D
As for my first single, I don't recall the first one I bought, but my first hand-me-down was The Beatles Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever.
