Maybe this isn't really GL stuff, but I have just bought a CD by a Scottish singer/ songwriter, Archie Fisher. He has written and performed some really great songs. Some have been recorded by others, like Stan and Garnet Rogers. the album is called Sunsets I've Galloped Into and Archie is accompanied and many tracks, by Garnet Sogers on violin I can highly recommend it. I have also heard some stuff written by Robbie MacNeill and William P Bennett ( separately ) Does anyone have any info about these two singer/ songwriters?

Garnet Sogers is a distant relative of the well known Canadian singer Garner Rogers!! who accompanied Archie ON many tracks.

Glad you came across Archie Fischer. I had the good luck to see him live once. I have two of his CD's including Sunsets. What a great uniqueness to his voice and alternate tunings he plays.

Strange how we come to find other artists. I became interested in Archie because of a song called "Bill Hosie". I first heard the song as done by Bill Staines. Its about a man who rebuilds a Supermarine S5 but dies in its maiden flight. The two versions are quite different, but each brings the story to life in their own way.

Who else do you listen to?

Hi bluewater64. Thanks for your reply. I have recently got another Archie Fisher CD called The Man with the Rhyme. Some tracks are by Archie, like Dark Eyed Molly, Witch of the West-Mer-Land and Western Island, all written in 1976, plus a range of traditional and contemporary Scotish songs.
I really started listening to the more Scottish Celtic music only recently having been introduced to Stan and then Garnet Rogers by a friend in Toronto. I have loved GL's music since around 1967/68.
Another favourite singer/ songwriter is an Irish guy, Christy Moore. He used to visit a folk club I helped to run back in the 60's and 70's, when he was full of fire and alcohol and some anti English fervour!! He has mellowed a great deal since then and is now acknowledged as one of the most prominent contemporary artists around. He often writes and sings songs about the "underdog", political injustice etc and he has a wonderful rich, mellow voice. Others I like are David McWilliams, another Irish singer who, sadly, died 2 years ago aged 56. He was from Belfast and remained a singer and writer to the end, though without the recognition he deserved. If you have heard a song called "Days of Pearly Spencer" it was him that wrote it.
Ralph McTell, Van Morrison, The Fureys, The Dubliners, all well known over here but may not be over there. Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Dylan, Ramblin Jack Elliott, etc. etc. etc.!!! I live near Manchester England so if you are ever over this way let me know.
