Hello, I've just discovered a singer-songwriter named Mary Gauthier, which is pronounced go shay, and really enjoy her. She has three albums, which I've ordered. She is extremely honest in her songwriting, and doesn't hold anything back. The music is country or folk, and is very acoustic based. Now if personal details about singers bother you, and you have a hard time getting past things, which I can understand, then I will be up front and tell you now that she is gay, but the music is not blatant about it. I think there is one song that even hints, but you're not going to get a soapbox or an earful of things you'd rather not hear about her preference. Other than that, she is honest about other life experiences. Get a sense of her at www.MaryGauthier.com
and start off with the NPR segment. That's a good introduction to her, and then if you like her singing, click on listen, and go into the CDBaby site and click on the song samples for each album. Happy listening, and please let me know what you think of her. If you want to read some of her lyrics, go to www.InsurgentCountry.com
and click on lyrics, and scroll down to Gauthier.

Matthew, I discovered Mary about three years ago when she opened for another favorite of mine, Slaid Cleeves (if you're not familiar with him, he's worth checking out). I agree with you 100%, I was very impressed with her music and her shows - I've seen her 4 times now, twice opening for Slaid and twice opening for Guy Clark.
I have all three of her CDs and a few bootlegs of her shows with Slaid - they're all great. She really is a lot of fun to see live because of the stories she tells to go along with her songs - she just keeps you laughing most of the time. I had the chance to meet her at one of the Slaid shows because one of Slaid's band members sat down with my friend and I and while we were chatting, Mary came over to tell him something and ended up joining us. Really nice lady. Very down to earth and friendly. You mentioned that she is gay, which is true, but while she doesn't hide it, she doesn't flaunt it either. She's just a person with the same emotions, heartache, fears, concerns, etc., as anyone else. I get a kick out of reading her travel journal at the web site - she is so honest with the highlights and lowlights of touring - and though she knows it's public record, she writes like she's writing a letter to her best friend, even when she's whining In her mind, her fans are her friends.
Enjoy the CDs!
