Pop Quiz, Hotshot

By Jim Slotek

Happy 65th to Gordon Lightfoot, Canada's unofficial poet laureate (yeah, we know, there's an official one named George Bowering, but where was he when the Edmund Fitzgerald sank?). We wish you nothing but pussywillows, cattails, soft winds and roses. In honour of the man whose muse wears a ribbon of darkness, try this round on for size:

THIS WEEK'S ROUND

1. What home town do Lightfoot and Stephen Leacock have in common?

2. Gord is said to have written Sundown about an ex-girlfriend and eventual convicted felon. Who she?

3. Which Lightfoot song commemorated the Detroit race riots of 1967?

4. How old was the go-go girl "just in from somewhere" in Go Go Round?

5. A billion people saw Elvis Presley play a Lightfoot song in his most famous live show, Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite. Which song was it?

6. Somewhat less than a billion people heard a disco version of a Gord hit in the movie 54 with Mike Myers. The song, as sung by Ultra Nate, Amber and Jocelyn Enriquez, actually became a hit again. Name it.

7. What was the other Lightfoot song that Elvis covered?

8. What kind of people always seem to know when you're feeling blue?

9. Marty Robbins took a Lightfoot song to the top of the Billboard country charts. Which one?

10. In Lightfoot's U.S. debut, he shared the bill at La Cave club in Cleveland with a visually impaired performer who became famous himself. Who he?

answers next week.....

#6 Would be If you could read my mind and
#10 Maybe Roy Orbison? Nah he was famous in the 50's how about Little Stevie Wonder? The only two visually impaired I can think of, guess I'm baffeled.

Forgot about him, he was popular in the early 70's. Could be him.

Actually, only months after The Doors had their hit with,"Light My Fire",Jose F. had his version go top 10 in 1968. I have no doubt that it was he who shared the bill with GL. Sharing with Stevie Wonder is too odd a billing (especially in the '60s) and Roy Orbison wasn't blind. He did wear glasses but one night at a concert in the first half of the '60s he grabbed his sunglasses by mistake and went on stage with them on. It must've made some kind of difference because he never stopped wearing them onstage.

The girlfriend that "Sundown" is about is the same woman who dated John Belushi that gave John that last lethal hypo-drug shot that took his life. I forgot her name but Gord dated her for awhile.

The Go-Go Girl was "only 21".
#3 is "Black Day In July" of course.

Elvis sang "Early Morning Rain" on TV.
#9 is "Ribbon Of Darkness".
We all know #8!
#6 is,"If You Could Read My Mind". I have that single.
#1 is obvious. Those are all the one's I know. As for #7,my brother is the big Elvis fan so you'd think I'd know the answer. Good luck to whomever can get #7! Been me,later!

(Cathy Smith - and they were together for a couple or three tumultuous years)

Good luck to whomever can get #7!
http://www.lightfoot.ca/covers.htm says Presley covered "Early Morning Rain" and "For Lovin' Me"

Yes. I figured it out yesterday that Elvis did, "For Lovin' Me" when I went record shopping yesterday. That version is from a 1973 LP simply titled,"ELVIS". (How deeply original. ) I read on that list that Jack Jones and Jane's Addiction both did a version of IYCRMM. That would sure make a funny duet!! Well, looks like we've answered them all! Later!
