though it was off of the 1980 dream St. Rose LP the song sounds older. even Protocal off on Summertime Dream sounds like it's older than the others songs on the album.

Well I have no doubt that many of Gord's songs are older than the album on which they first appeared.
For example "Go My Way" was released in 1971 on Summer Side Of Life but I distinctly remember being smitten by the song when I first heard it at a concert at McGill University Montreal in 1969 before I returned to the UK.I(I also recall being disappointed that it was not on 1970's IYCRMM)(in the SSOL sheet music book it is shown as being copyrighted to Warner Bros Inc in 1966 and 1971)
And I also heard "Me and Bobby Magee on CBC Radio's Charlottetown Festival broadcast in October 1969 long before the Sit Down
Young Stranger/IYCRMM album was released in 1970
In the case of "Cape Horn" according to Wayne Frances' chronology:-
in 1979
"Lightfoot provides the title song for the documentary, Ghosts Of Cape Horn."
several songs fom the 1964-1966 WB demos collection made it to official albums rather later in particular TOO MUCH TO LOSE eventually surfacing on Songbook in 1999 along with several older recordings of course

You know,in an opposite case,the song,"You'll Still Be needing Me",from Songbook was recorded in the mid-60's. ...but somehow to me,it sounds like it could have been on any LP from ..."Read My Mind" to "Sundown".

When I first heard it 3 years ago,it sounded like it was "brand new"! As for ..."Cape Horn",I think it's the "sailor's slang" lyrics that make it sound older "you old sea dogs!" :D

don't know why I didn't think of this till now but it's interesting you mention hearing Me and Bobby MaGee because as you or some here might know Kris Kristoffersen, think i spelled his name right, wrote that song and his version of the song was in 1970 witch I think was also his debut. I read on Wayne's site besides the 65 Tonight Show appearance, in 69 he makes appearance on Hullabalo performing Sat. Clothes and Johnny Cashes Variety show also performing Me and Bobby MaGee. wonder how long Kristoffersen had the song before recording it?

But after finding out it was done originally for a documentary everything made sense. Whoever produced that documentary obviously knew where to go (Lightfoot) for the perfectly crafted song.
