Hello - I live in Phoenix, AZ and just built a new house off the Carefree Highway. I remember Gordon Lightfoots song that I always loved by the same name. I have heard tales about the fact he wrote that song after the highway. Is it true? What is the story? I also heard that he never returned to Arizona/Carefree highway after he wrote that song. Ok everyone - what are the facts? Help?

The story is true that he wrote the song for that road. Also, he tells of having almost left the lyrics in the glovebox of his rental car. At some point I thought I'd seen of photo of Rick Haynes by that sign...but it's been so long that I may have that fact wrong.
