some songs like Early Morning Rain, For Loving Me, were or probably better by others than Lightfoot himself. i know Peter Paul & Mary did EMR and was also done by The Kingston Trio and Elvis PP&M also did For Loving Me and i understand it was a top 20 hit for them. have any of you ever felt that it was wrong that he perhaps didn't have sucess with those songs? unless 1 or both of those songs charted in Canada. also while we know Black Day In July created strife was there ever any other GL songs that you know of that he might of been criticized for in 1 waqy or another?

I figure it's been the bane of all folk singers that middle America has an easier time hearing PPM sing Dylan than Dylan sing Dylan. Same-Same Gord.

But it's not new. The Weavers (w/ Pete Seger et.all.) were huge favorites w/ Goodnight Irene. I doubt even the fathful follower of folk music never hear the orginal by Huddy Leadbetter - Leadbelly.

The world thinks Mr. Tamborine Man consists of one verse and Jim McGuin's ringing 12 string Rickenbacker. A 2 min record of perfection to be sure, but what about the other 384 verses.

Leonard Cohen is another example. Suzanne was covered by beautiful voices, not possessed by Leonard.

Gord has seldom been associated w/ polotics (ala Black Day in July,) but that's just cause people carrying the signs weren't paying attention.
