Two minutes with… Gordon Lightfoot

Written by Walter Bird Jr. · 11/05/2015 · 5:01 am

Widely regarded as among the most talented singer/ songwriters alive, Gordon Lightfoot rides down that Carefree Highway into Worcester for a Nov. 10 show at Hanover Theatre - which, by the way, marks the 40h anniversary of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the title of one of Lightfoot’s most popular songs. Thrice married, and with a 77th birthday just around the corner, Lightfoot continues to tour at a dizzying pace. October and November are proving especially busy, but there are the occasional windows of opportunity for the inquisitive media. In between a gig in Windsor, Ontario on Oct. 17 and a Nov. 3 show in Green Bay Wisconsin, Worcester Magazine caught up with Lightfoot by phone on a Monday evening.

How much are you looking forward to playing in Worcester? New England is always a special event. We have quite a few friends up there, and they all come out.

Bob Dylan has said of hearing a Gordon Lightfoot song, he wished it would last forever. Is there any better praise than that for a singer/songwriter? I have listened to Bob Dylan since 1962, his very first album. When I was recorded, my management was in the same office Dylan’s was. I got to know him personally. When my name is mentioned, he is just being very kind.

Staying with that theme, your songs have been recorded by some pretty notable artists – Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Judy Collins, to name a few. Are you critical when you listen to someone else perform one of your songs? I never heard a cover recording I didn’t like. I like everything. I love the fact that they took the time to sing my songs. I can’t offer any criticism. Do you have a favorite song of yours? “If You Could Read My Mind.” It’s a ballad, and it’s very personal. “Sundown,” “The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald,” “Rainy Day People.” But “If You Could Read My Mind” is about a marriage falling apart, and it was written at a time when I was married for seven years. I already had two kids. It was a very sensitive thing to be writing about. I didn’t know what I was writing about until I was just about finished. I’ve had that happen with lots of stuff. Dead, fading away or very much alive.

How would you describe songwriting among today’s musicians? Songwriting nowadays is a collaboration of the record producer and the artist. If the artist gets a concept, it doesn’t require much. It just requires a verse, and the producer just grabs it, and away they go. For us, the songs were all finished when we went to record it. Artists today come up with the idea and the producers do it.

Can you do it that way? Me? No, I’m stuck in the whole songwriting process. I’m still old school.

Do you still meet with family members of the victims of the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking? I meet them at most of my shows. They’re some of the most wonderful folks I’ve ever met.

When I read or listen to the lyrics to that song, it’s as if I’m reading a firsthand account. How personal does the songwriting process get for you? It’s sort of like that. I want to do a good job. I go and get old newspaper clippings and research as much as I can. In “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” the fact that the lake never gives up her dead, that’s because the lake is so cold down that deep that the bodies will never float up. That’s something I read.

How did you come to write “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald?” I was writing an album when that ship went down Nov. 10, 1975. I wrote it on a very rainy night in an empty old house in Toronto. The tune came from an old Irish dirge ... You know, we just played a show before 5,000 people. It was one of the best versions [of “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald] we ever did.

You will turn 77 in November, seven days after your show at Hanover Theatre. How are you feeling physically and vocally? I feel good. I do exercises daily. I’ve got it on my schedule. Everything I do is on a schedule. I’ve got six children and four grandchildren, so you need to have a schedule.

Mark Twain once wrote, “The report of my death was an exaggeration.” You were the victim of a death hoax in 2010. What is it like to hear you have died? I heard it on my own car radio. I went into my office and called the radio station. It was 2 in the afternoon, so it didn’t get a chance to build up. The first thing I did was call my family, then I had to go to a lawyers’ meeting. The next day in the paper, there was my picture with the headline, “Dead Wrong.” That became my opening line at concerts.

Default WORCESTER,MA-Nov.10-2015

RICK: yesterday, November 10th, we performed the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in the gorgeous Hanover Center's Theater in Worcester, MA. I have to say that it really gave me a chill! This recently renovated theater uses the latest and greatest new sound system, the ANYA EAW rig. We were last in Wooster in 1992 at Mechanics Hall up the street, and The Dead were around the corner at the arena last nite, but we still had a full house. yes that IS the original chandelier that they found packed away.

Gordon Lightfoot takes fans on journey at Hanover Theatre

Written by Walter Bird Jr. · 11/11/2015 · 5:01 am

Gordon Lightfoot is right. Rumors of his death have been greatly exaggerated. He draws laughs when he uses the line, referring to a death hoax several years ago, near the beginning of his concerts. The Canadian singer/songwriter is alive and well, thank you very much, even if he is betrayed at times by a weathered voice that has been regaling fans for more than 40 years.

Not able to hit many of the high notes he once struck with ease, and appearing to battle a cold, Lightfoot had no problem entertaining the 1,600 or so fans that turned out on a rainy night to see the talented lyricist at the Hanover Theatre Tuesday, Oct. 10. Maybe it was because his 77th birthday was just around the corner.

Or that his first show in the area since 1992 just happened to fall on the 40th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, the subject of one of Lightfoot’s most hauntingly beautiful songs. Or maybe it was the solid backing of a four-piece band lifted by a new lead guitarist. Fans were with Lightfoot from his opening song, 1975’s “Now and Then” up until the closing chords of the band’s encore, “Waiting for You.”

In all, Lightfoot played some 25 songs, taking listeners on a tour of his “catalog,” as he called it. He spoke sparingly, but with sharp humor, and clearly connected with an audience that gave him standing ovations, thunderous applause, and even shouted out, “We love you” more than once over the roughly two-hour show, which featured a 20-minute break.

A decidedly older crowd greeted most of the night’s songs with knowing applause. Four decades of songwriting and vocal prowess were on full display - and his 12-string guitar impressed. A slightly weakened voice did nothing to take away from the show. Credit a tight-sounding band, anchored by longtime bassist Rick Haynes, who joined the band in 1969, with helping Lightfoot along. Drummer Barry Keane and keyboardist Mike Hefferman were solid all night, and the new kid on the block, guitarist Carter Lancaster, who came on board in 2011, got in more than a few licks as the “great player” Lightfoot has called him.

Lightfoot took the audience on a tour of three decades with the first three songs: “Now and Then,” from 1975’s “Cold on the Shoulder”; “Sea of Tranquility,” from the 1980 album, “Dream Street Rose”; and “Drifters,” off “A Painter Passing Through” from 1998.

“All the Lovely Ladies,” another offering from “Cold on the Shoulder”; “Shadows,” from the 1982 album of the same name; and “Rainy Day People,” yet another ditty from “Cold on the Shoulder,” were among the next songs.

Lightfoot got toes tapping with “Let It Ride,” off of 1986’s “East of Midnight,” then slowed things down with the first song of the night off “Gord’s Gold” in 1975, “Beautiful.”

For the more casual Lightfoot fans, “Carefree Highway,” from Lightfoot’s “Sundown” in 1974, was instantly recognizable. Also noticeable, however, was the singer’s struggle to hit the refrain spot-on. It hardly seemed to matter to his fans, who clapped and cheered as he sang the opening line, “Picking up the pieces of my shattered dream.”

Lightfoot finished off the first set with three more tunes, leaving the crowd wanting more with the finisher, “Sundown,” from the 1974 album of the same name.

With a nod to Veterans Day, Lightfoot, changing from a red to blue jacket, stood on stage to open the second set with only Hefferman behind him and a black background. He sang “ Drink Yer Glasses Empty,” a poignant tune about heading off to war, from 1993’s “Waiting for You."

After singing the blue-collar, country-tinged “Sweet Guinevere,” the only song of the night off of his 1978 album, “Endless Wire,” Lightfoot observed he was playing in Worcester on the anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald tragedy. Naturally, his haunting ode to the 29 victims, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” came next.

Lightfoot did not choose to end his show with a hit, with about nine more songs following what, for some fans, may have been the highlight. Hardly a soul left the theatre, however, and Lightfoot rewarded them with songs including “Don Quixote” (“Don Quixote,” 1972), “A Painter Passing Through,” “If You Could Read My Mind” (the 1969 hit that became Lightfoot’s first song to appear on American music charts), “Restless” (“Waiting For You,” 1993), “Baby Step Back” (“Shadows,” 1982) and “Early Morning Rain.”

After walking off stage, Lightfoot and co. reappeared to warm applause, and the singer flashed more humor, saying, “Thank you very much, but we were coming back anyway.”

“Waiting For You” proved an apt way to close out the show. It had been a long time since Lightfoot had been around Worcester. His fans had been waiting, and Lightfoot did not disappoint. With a light show that featured only changing colors behind the band, and just five musicians grouped tightly together on stage, the Hanover seemed almost like a living room, with Lightfoot’s voice sometimes barely above a whisper. And his fans hung onto every word.

Sorry Mende my bad
I woulda thunk that a learned fellow like yourself would have easily sussed out the error of my ways!!
To save time scrolling yet again through the gazillion Dreadful Grate concerts (it must be obligatory to be a masochist to be a Deadhead??) under the results that a search for "G" for Gordon produces on sugarmegs I posted what I thought was the link from my history listing but it was in fact the streaming link (I had been trying that out) not the full item listing that shows "View SetList"> "wma">"Mp3" in front of the full concert date and title (where wma and mp3 constitute download links for the complete single file of the concert in those two compressed formats (the wma one is a pretty useless 24.2MB file of the 1:23:29 concert sampled at a derisory 40KBPS the mp3 a much more respectable 130MB at 170KBPS) on
http://tela.sugarmegs.org/alpha/g.html
to avoid the aforementioned drudge of scrolling try right clicking this (the actual mp3 link) it opened a download display for me OK
