Just sitting here on my pc listening to "Shadows", once again I was amazed at the brilliance of "Triangle"! "A tunafish turned to a mermaid in bed and said theres goes another sandbar!" Why the heck wasn't this on "Songbook"??!! There are so many great lines in this song.

Hey Dan! Borderstone here! I'm sure we can all agree that "Triangle" sould have been on Songbook. I think the reason it wasn't is that the songs that were chosen were more familiar. (To whom this would apply I can't imagine,since for GL fans,we're very familiar!) They we're also the potential "singles" because as we know,GL made videos for them in '81/'82. The title track wasn't a video or single but it's too good to pass up! If you look at the successive LP selections for each,I noticed he did not choose more than 5 on most.

To pass on "Triangle" for say "Blackberry Wine" though...yes,that to me does not make sense. "T." is a better chioce by far and certainly more memorable but again,I feel it was a case of supposed "familiarity" of the songs. "It's a mighty hard way to go down!"

I know i'm diverting from my own topic here, but as you mentioned videos. I know Gord made several for "Shadows", but isn't it amazing that one was never made for "East of Midnight" i.e. "Anything for Love". Especially after all the time and effort put into making the album. Gord was obviously attempting something contemporary and perhaps, commercial. Maybe he had a bad experience making those earlier ones!

I like "Triangle". I thinks it's a great song, but I don't have the original. I have the re-did version on GG2. How would you compare the 2 recordings?

Thge original is always the best! No matter what! (Unless a song is lousy to begin with and someone does it better.)

Dan,to my knowledge,there is no video for the song,"Anything For Love" or the other tracks. I would guess that since it didn't help him on Shadows and he also made none for Salute (that we know of) it'd be a wasted effort. His music is worth that effort
but in the '80s,his career was as cooled off as Disco!

He's said himself that "East Of Midnight" almost became his swan song (last album.)

We're certainly glad it wasn't. That would have been very anti-climatic and just a lousy way to say good-bye to the biz! It's been me,later!

Not to get off topic here, Borderstone, but I must say I disagree. While in most cases the original is better, some, such as "Shadows" and "The Circle Is Small", sound better re-recorded. But some songs sound great either way. The original and re-recorded version of "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" are two different songs. Same goes for "The Pony Man".

there isn't much difference between the original version of triangle and the re-recorded one. the GG vol 2 version just sounds a bit more crisp. i actually prefer the re-recorded version. it has a nice punch to it with the drums

Ahhh, Triangle - my all time favorite song. It truly feels like an old sea song...just so 'different'...

I agree that the rerecording of "Shadows" just tops the original. It's got a more intimate sound. I also prefer "Race Among the Ruins" on "Gord's Gold II". I think his voice suits the song better on the newer version.

I agree about the 2nd version of "The Pony Man". The 2nd version of "Shadows",well,I guess so. I can 1/2 agree with "Triangle but certainly not,"Race Among The Ruins". I prefer the '76 version. The '80s version is okay but a bit lacking in excitement. If it were me (and it's not) I'd leave well enough alone . Later!
