I was listening to a CD of Irish folk music recently (in a friend's car). A song came on that had the exact same tune as "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald", with lyrics about some Irish historical event.

Did Gordon "lift" the tune from the Irish, or was he ripped off by a pseudo Irish folk group?

If anyone knows the answer........please reply.
