Well All Right!! saying the pic is "a bit dark" is not how I would have described it
"pale to almost non-existance" would seem more apt.Surely you can set up your scanner to compensate before scanning??

No doubt the camera you used way back in 1990 is long gone,if not I'd chuck it and open a piggy bank for a digital replacement!
I have been searching for a freeware photo editing program(me) for you but so far my first preference (Serif's PhotoPlus) failed as they omitted to e-mail me the necessary unlock key after I downloaded it. so to keep the ball rolling I used MGI Photosuite again:
