Alfred Damon Runyon was a fabulous reporter, writer, and all-around character. See http://www.pressclub.org/about/history/drunyon.htm
for a brief synopsis of his life and times. If you've ever seen "Guys and Dolls" or one of the versions of "Lady for a Day" or "Little Miss Marker," or "The Lemon Drop Kid, you've seen Runyon adapted for stage and screen. Most of his characters are on the fringes of polite society, often gamblers or gangsters. His most famous quote is probably "It may be that the race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong - but that is the way to bet."
