Hi Affair firstly I half to note that you are obviously somewhatBewitched,Bothered, and Bewildered by album release dates
(click that link only if you have a few spare moments and are not easily offended)
yes Gord appeared on BBC television in 1963
"Hosted 8 one-hour summer replacement shows in England for the BBC called "Country And Western"
I suspect that "Early Lightfoot/Lightfoot!" may well have trailed TWIF in its UK release
especialy since his first UK solo stage appearance as a solo performer was in 1968
No I do not know why Lightfoot! was not issued earlier since he toured with Ian and Sylvia (Tyson) in the UK in 1966 (after
Lightfoot! had been released in Canada) the retitling for the UK of that album confusingly as it later transpired as "Early
Lightfoot" seems to me to indicate that it may well have been done to reflect that it was actually an older album than TWIF.
regarding your point sabout the issuing of DQ and ODR
I can confirm that at some point in the 70's,while in England I started writing a sequence number and sometimes a purchase
date on little lables on all of my Lightfoot vinyl
These show DQ was number eight and ODR number nine
by then I was haunting record stores to make sure that I did not miss any release, and I also had a friend who owned a (mainly
classical) record shop and he would tell me as soon as he heard of a new release and order it for me.
In fact I dated my purchase of DQ as 29 April 1972 which was soon after the unhappiest time of my life and I can clearly
recall looking out at some heavy April showers as I heard "Looking At The Rain" for the very first time,(surely one of Gord's
most poignant compositions in my book)
Wayne certainly puts DQ ahead of ODR in his album listing but also states in his chronology section:-
"In May, Don Quixote peaks at #42 on the album charts."
and
"In August, Lightfoot records Old Dan's Records in Toronto"
"In October, Old Dan's Records is released, the first time Lightfoot has released two albums of new material in one year
since 1968.
"In December, Old Dan's Records peaks at #95 on the album charts."
Certainly at the 10 June 1972 London concert that I attended not one song on the setlist was from ODR
I also found:-
http://www.softshoe-slim.com/lists/l/lightfoot.html
which/witch clearly says DQ was released in 4/72 and ODR 11/72
so as I reckon Wayne strove for accuracy on his site Florian's listing in the reverse order may safely be ignored
John Fowles
"And, you know, certainly we had an influence on Gordon in that we recorded his songs, and because of us recording them,
Peter, Paul & Mary recorded them."
