Singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot will appear at the Moncton Coliseum on May 11.

Gordon Lightfoot to play in Moncton

Nearly five years after cancelling tour dates, including a Moncton show, in the face of a near-fatal health problem, Gordon Lightfoot is finally coming to the Hub City.

Fiona Diamond of concert promoter Brookes Diamond Productions confirmed yesterday to the Times & Transcript that the legendary Canadian singer/songwriter will perform at the Moncton Coliseum on May 11. Tickets for the show will go on sale Friday.

Lightfoot, who turns 69 this year, is best known for hits Sundown, The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and If You Could Read My Mind.

He was scheduled to do several Maritime dates in 2002, with a concert in Moncton on Sept. 17, 2002. But before the tour, the singer collapsed from a near-fatal abdominal hemorrhage that left him bedridden in hospital for several weeks.

Upon recovery, Lightfoot got to work right away on new music, eventually releasing the album Harmony in 2004.

Brookes Diamond Productions was the promoter for the tour that was cancelled in 2002. It had always planned on bringing Lightfoot to the Maritimes when he was able to.

"It's taken this long to get him back," Diamond says. "He's been very busy, but he did realize that he would like to perform here and not disappoint all of his fans here."

The Moncton date is part of a five-city Maritime tour. Lightfoot will also perform in Saint John, Halifax, St. John's and one other date Diamond wasn't able to divulge yesterday. An official announcement for the tour is scheduled to be made today.

Tickets to Gordon Lightfoot's show in Moncton on Friday, May 11, go on sale this Friday, Jan. 26. Tickets are $55, taxes included, not including box office fees. Tickets can be purchased at the Moncton Coliseum box office, by phone at 506-857-4100 or online at www.monctoncoliseum.com
