Singer Gordon Lightfoot's good as gold

GORDON LIGHTFOOT'S appearance at the Montalvo Arts Center in Saratoga in September was more than just a concert; it was a reason to celebrate.
It was Lightfoot's first performance in the Bay Area since undergoing emergency surgery for an abdominal hemorrhage that nearly ended his life in 2002. The procedure was reportedly so serious — doctors had to temporarily displace some of his vital organs to perform the operation — there were serious doubts whether Lightfoot would ever perform again.

Yet, there he was — back on the stage and playing all the big hits that made him a superstar in the'70s. His voice, somewhat weakened and very weathered, was a far cry from what one heard during his golden days. But it was still Lightfoot — and that was enough to thrill the crowd. The singer-songwriter gave fans plenty to cheer about as he dug deep into his batch of greatest hits and pulled out such winners as "Sundown," "Carefree Highway" and "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." He also played the wonderful "If You Could Read My Mind," which was masterfully covered on Johnny Cash's most recent album.

Lightfoot returns to the Bay Area to perform a 7:30 p.m. show Thursday at the Fox Theatre, 2215 Broadway, Redwood City. Tickets are $45-$65. Call (408) 961-5858 or visit http://www.foxdream.com.
