Default Edmund Fitzgerald ballet memories

Looking back at the ballet
By Christa Lawler

During a late-1970s concert at the DECC Auditorium, a famous folkster known for his coverage of Lake Superior’s largest take gave an unlikely mid-concert shout-out.

Gordon Lightfoot, from the stage, thanked Gilbert and Nancy Reed for their dance interpretation of “Edmund Fitzgerald,” a News Tribune reviewer reported. The singer-
songwriter had worked with the choreographers who were interested in turning his tribute into ballet.

No problem, Lightfoot reportedly told the directors of the local company. A ballet could easily be set to his music.

Sure enough: It premiered to a solid review a few years after the freighter famously sunk.

“Memoria in Aeterna: Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” gets a rerun Saturday as part of the Minnesota Ballet’s 50th Anniversary Gala hosted by Pat Kelly.
