Once again, Bob Dylan did not perform anything from his new album at his concert in Edmonton, Alberta, last night. However, fans witnessed something even more special.

Dylan played an unexpected "request" at the show, according to a post at Bob Links. It was the live premiere of "Shadows," a song by Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot.

Dylan has been a big supporter of Lightfoot's, even covering "Early Morning Rain" on 1970's "Self Portrait," and performing "I'm Not Supposed to Care" on stage. Lightfoot, like Dylan, was managed by Albert Grossman.

In 1986, Dylan inducted Lightfoot into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame, where he called the singer "someone of rare talent." (Check out this video.) Lightfoot also made an appearance at a Rolling Thunder Revue's Maple Leaf Garden show in 1975, and his cover of "Ballad In Plain D" appeared in the film "Renaldo & Clara." He also performed "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, and more recently covered "Ring Them Blues" on the album "Waiting For You," according to Dylan Cover.

Dylan praised Lightfoot many times, once saying, “He became a mentor for a long time. I think he probably still is to this day.”

Dylan had this to say about Lightfoot, and "Shadows," in 2009:

Bill Flannigan: Who are some of your favorite songwriters?
Bob Dylan: Buffett I guess. Lightfoot. Warren Zevon. Randy (Newman). John Prine. Guy Clark. Those kinds of writers. ...
BF: You and Lightfoot go way back.
BD: Oh yeah. Gordo's been around as long as me.
BF: What are your favorite songs of his?
BD: "Shadows," "Sundown," "If You Could Read My Mind." I can't think of any I don't like.

Below is last night's set list, courtesy of Bob Links:
