ORILLIA - The bras are back in town.
And this time around, the imaginatively decorated undergarments will bear star-studded signatures.
Organizers of the third-annual ‘Bras For a Cause’ campaign have enlisted a who’s who of familiar faces to help drum up dollars for an endowment fund supporting those touched by cancer.
Johnny Reid, Ronnie Hawkins, Moses Znaimer, George Canyon, and Kevin Frankish, among others, will add their signatures to the artfully decorated bras that will be auction in August.
Women in Netweaving Growing Strong and Show Your Support Orillia are jointly organizing the undertaking.
“You don’t realize how many people you know have been affected in one way, shape or form by cancer,” said Carol McIsaac, a cancer survivor and a member of the local women’s networking group.
“A lot of my family has succumbed to cancer, so this is just one of my ways to help give back,” she said. “You have to do a little bit of good in your life. If helping run this once a year can make some light at the end of the tunnel for someone else, then why not?”
Anyone wishing to enter a decorated bra can register for a fee of $25 during the June 8 to 10 spring boat show at the waterfront.
Participants are asked to e-mail photos of the finished bras to organizers for display online.
Decorated bras will be exhibited in the windows of sponsoring businesses, with customers invited to make donations in the months leading up to the fashion show.
In the first week of August, all bras will be displayed at Home Hardware.
The 10 bras that bring the most donations will be modeled by local men at the Aug. 10 to 12 Orillia Waterfront Festival.
A calendar featuring the winning bras is planned as well.
Proceeds will go to an endowment fund overseen by the Community Foundation of Orillia and Area.
“It is to help people whose lives have been affected by any type of cancer,” McIsaac said. “They would contact the community fund people or ourselves and fill out an application.”
Celebrity bras will be offered for auction at the waterfront festival.
Organizers are additionally reaching out to hometown troubadour Gordon Lightfoot for his signature on a custom-designed bra.
