It's not you Dan who is losing it here is the posting that contained that "interview" that you recalled.
As one time heavy smoker until over indulgence caused a blockage in a neck artery that gave me a luckily not too severe stroke over twelve years ago (not even a whiff of tobacco since) then I have to say that the news our tres Charmont moderator reported sounded a trifle unlikely.
But I have a plan for Gord that I hope to present to him later this year

after singing Don Quixote he mentioned how hard it was to reach the high notes and even more so since he's stopped smoking- but the Dr. told him to. He also said something about the hearing problem he's had for 2 years now. He covered up one ear then the other and said, "Yeah, it still sounds good."
