TURPENTINE
From: Knotty Pine
Lyric line: She's my knotty pine, she leans with the wind,
She cries turpentine.
(one of the oddest words he uses in a song..lol )

Char, just thinking about your comment on
turpentine, and how odd it is to use in a song by Gord, it struck me as:
thats funny, seems to make sense to me that he sings "she cries turpentine" when he seemingly is comparing a tree to his girlfriend, or a metaphor between the various combinations there lol.. and he mentions turpentine coming out of the tree, as if it (she) were crying...made sense to me in context, -however unappealing for a prosaic song element lol...because thats where turpentine as a classic thinner comes from, typically, older uses for paint thinning, and uniquely I think from the balsam in your neck of the woods - a variation that dries like glass, comes from: trees -(one of several sources, trees, certain bushes, and synthetic "petro-based turp", but notably . one variation that I recalled from Lumber days (
THATS why it seemed predictable in a song about trees...) is the
Canada Balsam, hopefully not boring, but of brief interest given your nationality, from WIKIPEDIA:
Quote:
Canada balsam, also called Canada turpentine or balsam of fir, is a turpentine which is made from the resin of the balsam fir tree (Abies balsamea).

and maybe two more sentences from WIKI is bearable lol :
Quote:
Some uses include:
in optical technology to glue together optical elements such as two prisms to form a beam splitter, or two lenses;
to fix scratches in glass (car glass for instance) as invisibly as possible.

Mr. Science Wizard: that....is AMAZING ..lol.... not... but thought the
Canada Balsam would catch your Patriotic side
BTW, isn't that a weird optical illusion, when you combine red & white, with a blue background, the red seems to lift off the screen higher than the white...Not all people see it, I mentioned it once to
Jesse Joe, but I don't think he saw my post, which I did maybe a month after his. Do you see it ? The concept, believe or not (groan) has been used in Cartography for years on glossy media, and you WANT the red map element to be prominent.
AMAZING ! sound of -
pin dropping-
clink....sorry
-oh well. science show...maybe if we are all good they'll play more tomorrow from Mr. Science Wizard, one of my heros as a child, as was the professor on Gilligan's Island -

Clue as submitted:Q170 TURPENTINE
Clue,per database:Q170....like turpentine
Song submitted:
Knotty Pine would take it if it worked with clue as an ambig, but:
Lyrics as submitted:She cries turpentine doesn't incoporate "like" turpentine...

I'm sorry Char - remember the "like turpentine" , and at the end of the lyric verse - you might have the 1986 versus 23 years earlier clues mixed backwards as you think of it - hope that helps.... off of the head is hard on ones like that, but that "like" is pivotal, as is 1963 +/-
