Eye on Idol
Paul Anka will visit Canadian Idol on August 27 and 28, joining the Top 4 for standards week. With 50 years in show business and multiple international hits, the music legend is the perfect person to coach the young vocalists in taking on fame at a young age.
Often considered the very first Canadian idol, Anka recorded his first single, "I Confess," when he was 14 years old. At age 16, he released what would be one of his best-known songs of all time, "Diana." Written about a babysitter he'd had a crush on, the song remains an international hit and oldies staple.
During his time on the show, Anka will mentor the competitors as they prepare to sing the classics before taking the stage himself to perform a song from his upcoming release, "Classic Songs, My Way." The album will be released Sept. 4 and is a collection of Anka's favourite songs featuring a duet with Anka's protégé, Michael Bublé.
The CD also features a new version of Anka's instant classic "My Way," which hit the top of the charts for blue-eyed crooner Frank Sinatra in 1969.
Anka has a staggering 900 songs to his credit. Over one hundred of his songs have been recorded by other artists including Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt and Robbie Williams. His Billboard chart statistics include three number one songs: "Diana," "Lonely Boy," and "You're Having My Baby," as well as twenty-two Top 20 hits.
In addition to being nominated for an Academy Award for "The Longest Day," Anka was honoured in 2005 when he awarded the prestigious Order of Canada, recognizing his lifetime achievements and contributions to people in all sectors of Canadian society. He is also a proud inductee to Canada's Walk of Fame.
British sensation Mika, who was originally scheduled to appear during Top 4 week, has bowed out of Canadian Idol due to illness. The show has yet to entertain guests Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson and Eva Avila, as well as an additional superstar guest to be announced soon.
