I'm actually surprised that anybody who has not read the books can follow the storyline in the movies. I think only the first two movies were self explanatory, as they followed the books almost too closely which made them kind of boring in my opinion. In the last three movies I was really glad that I could fill in the "gaps" with bits of info from the books. Maybe they just expect that most people have read the book anyway.
