An exceedingly good question Peter to which I can only retort as folows:-
According to the authoritative Wiki at:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hitchhiker's_Guide_to_the_Galaxy
Where I read read:-
the answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. When the answer was revealed as 42, they were
forced to build a more powerful computer to work out what the Ultimate Question actually was, but their plans never come to fruition. (Later on, referencing this, Adams would create a
puzzle which
could be approached in multiple ways, all yielding the answer 42.)
on that page I then read:-
"Douglas Adams who wrote The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
created a puzzle whose question was unknown, but whose answer is already known to be 42
