Brink,I'm not attempting in any sense to convert you to a Prince fan but I have always known since the R & R Hall Of Fame came out in 1986,that Prince would one day be inducted. I didn't think it would be this soon,of course. I agree there's a vast ocean of artists who should be in by now but for what ever reason,'80s acts are being taken 1st before their "elders". The people they most likely were influenced by.
In Prince's case,he was a real stand-out act almost from the start. He went to WB and basically said what "he" wanted to the label exec's and not the other way around. He did Disco, yes, but in '79 you almost had to. Having seen his pre-top 40 videos like Contrversy,Dirty Mind & Uptown and then what he emerged with on the LP 1999 and then of course the deal-sealer "Purple Rain",it was easy to see he'd be a long lasting artist. To each his own though.
As for my comment on ZZ Top,I know they're good rockers but I was a little put off by them in '86 with their song and video,"Velcro Fly". A song about velcro "zippers"? A Paula Abdul taught dance video? Ick!
More so though is back to the fact that there were other acts that truly should have been inducted. I wont go into that now. Been me,later!
