Well, I'm a little uncomfortable with making a distinction between "Americans" and "Canadians". Both countries are part of the North American continent, and even though most people associate "America" with the United States, Canada could also call themselves "Americans" (if they wanted to).

By comparison, we tend to refer to Native Americans as "Indians". If that is believable, then how do we refer to those who were born in India? I've heard many terms and none of them are fit to repeat.

As far as American cheese goes, it was probably name so by someone who thought it so bland, it had to come from "America" (or the US).
