I look at the two this way. The original makes me think of the sun having just finished going down,like twilight.

The GGII version,illuminated the idea that it's late at night and the kids are having this dream about "The Pony Man". So yes,night time is the right time.

Also,since #2 is longer,it's a little more intimate too,although I'll never stop liking the 1st.
