Nicholas Jennings had this on his FB - One of the many things I'll remember Pete Seeger for is the attention he brought to African music, especially the song "Wimoweh," which he covered with the Weavers in the '50s. Written and originally recorded in 1938 as "Mbube" by South Africa's Solomon Linda (seen in this photo, far left, with his group the Evening Birds), the song became a massive hit as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" for the Tokens and many others, but Linda never received any royalties or recognition. When Seeger found out that Linda was the composer, he sent him a cheque and always credited him from then on. Over the years, the song earned millions, including over $15 million for its use in The Lion King alone. In 2006, Solomon Linda's heirs settled a lawsuit with Walt Disney that finally brought substantial royalties from "Mbube" to his estate. Seeger was responsible for bringing Linda's now famous song to the world.

I'm so sad to hear of his passing. He was my father's favorite singer. I was raised on those songs. I was influenced by those songs, and that man, more than i probably know.
