Birds at the end of 'Gotta Get Away'
When the album Salute was recorded, were all the songs recorded back to back? As you all know, at the beginning of the song Whispers Of The North, you can hear the sound of birds as part of the soundtrack. But the bird sounds actually start at the end of the song Gotta Get Away (which comes right before 'Whispers' on the album). Has anyone else ever noticed this?

yes -
probably a stock recording they used for both... |

Loons, right? Love it all!

Re: Birds at the end of 'Gotta Get Away'
I don't think they recorded any of the songs back to back, just a good sound engineer/producer at work.
Yes, those are loons. A more northern bird than we have in Illinois. This same exact recording of the loons comes in at the beginning of 'Canary Yellow Canoe' if you have ever listened to it on the 'Songbook' set. Of course, it was a previously unreleased track. I'm glad that Gordon found a better use for it on 'Whispers Of The North'. It's so much more effective and reflective on 'Whispers', one of the best songs from my favorite G.L. album. Kelly Davis |

funny he didnt use it on an actually loon song, eh? (Ringneck Loon:) ) already overdone i suppose |
Re: Birds at the end of 'Gotta Get Away'
Just the case of someone, GL, or the producer or mixing engineer deciding to use the long final electric guitar note on GGA as a bed to begin the loon calls. I enjoy that practice when it's done tastefully.
Up at my summer home in Southwest MI, loons appear sometime in June and seem to be gone by October. They're not ringnecks, but man, some are really large! |

lol - well, i do enjoy his other fun rockers - even 'sometimes i don't mind'
(i do think CYC is Gord's "I've Been Everywhere... Man":) ) |
Re: Birds at the end of 'Gotta Get Away'
I'm so glad he finally included the song "Canary Yellow Canoe" in that Anthology. We heard him sing it in concert twice, back in the early 1980's. I was also thrilled that he recorded "The Auctioneer" on "Dream Street Rose" (even though he didn't write it - he sang it so well in concert).
Love his rock oriented tunes! |
Re: Birds at the end of 'Gotta Get Away'
I mostly,lurk and don't post but,
The birds were recorded by Dan Gibson and as you would expect from Gord, were credited on the Salute credits. Dan has passed away, but left some great sounds on this earth. |

(Of course if it's on an iPod/mp3 player, it's a different story). |

Me too! I was surprised no one mentioned it. I'd say it's Gord's most upbeat song next to CYC. |
