omigawd - I LOVE him getting up-I told him last night (and the first time he did it a few months ago)how great it was and it was such a new energetic dynamic to get up beside Gordon and see such a great interaction between the 2 of them.. Gordon seems to love it and we know Carter wouldn't be up there like that unless the man said it was ok.. I love it. Carter loves it too!

Lightfoot offers mix of hits, lesser-known tunes for adoring crowd at Kleinhans

Gordon Lightfoot, who turns 75 next month, brought a mix of his monster hits and some poignant, lesser-known tunes from his voluminous past to an adoring crowd Friday night at Kleinhans Music Hall.

The rail-thin Lightfoot is now an elegant figure with a chiseled profile and straight, shoulder-length silver hair, far from the athletic curly-haired Canadian folkie who churned out such popular songs as “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Sundown,” and “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” back in the 1970s. But somehow the beloved songs that never made it onto AM radio – from what he called his “old repertoire” – conveyed the most emotion as he stood center stage and worked his way through a challenging 26-song setlist.

His appearance on the stage drew screeches and whistles from the crowd, who were utterly silent during his first two songs, “The Watchman’s Gone,” and “Waiting For You.” Lightfoot’s voice, missing its once-honeyed upper and lower tones since a near-fatal illness in 2002, started off raspy but warmed a bit as he sang. On some tunes, in some phrases, his power returned; in others, his superb band, made up of guitarist Terry Clements, keyboardist Michael Heffernan, bass player Rick Haynes and drummer Barry Keane, filled in with supportive sound.

His phrasing has changed from velvety and lingering to somewhat staccato, and some of the songs seem slightly faster-paced than expected.

Few in the crowd seemed to care.

Lightfoot delivered almost every one of the hits people came to hear, along with some banter. He introduced “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” by saying that he used an old Irish tune, a dirge, for the melody. “I had the dirge, I had the urge and I had the chords,” he said. He later confessed that “In the Early Morning Rain,” started out as an early morning train, but once he decided it was “too common” and added the precipitation, Elvis recorded it.

Lightfoot was spare with his usual banter in the first half of the show, singing two opening songs before saying just “I’m Gordon Lightfoot, and reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated,” a remark attributed to Mark Twain.

In the second half, Lightfoot loosened up considerably, sharing some thoughts of previous shows at Melody Fair, being unable to make his way through the surging crowd at the Aud to meet Elvis (who had already recorded “Early Morning Rain”), and even telling a few corny jokes.

Among the prettiest tunes were the evocative “A Painter Passing Through”; “Winter’s Night,” complete with sleighbells; “As Fine as Fine Can Be,” which Lightfoot wrote for his daughter when she was young; and “If Children Had Wings,” which he wrote when he was separated from his children after the collapse of his first marriage.

The crowd went wild for “Rainy Day People,” and roared at the opening chords of “Edmund Fitzgerald.” Even the line about lakes Erie and Ontario in that classic Great Lakes song drew some yells.

Toe-tappers included “Baby Step Back” and “Cotton Jenny,” and Lightfoot switched up his usual pairing of “Ribbon of Darkness” and “Did She Mention My Name” by performing the ominous “Sundown” between them.

A quick encore consisted of “Old Dan’s Records,” not, as many were secretly and openly hoping for, “Canadian Railroad Trilogy.” But it was hard to be disappointed when Lightfoot lingered and then walked the length of the stage and back, charmingly leaning over to slap hands with eager fans who surged forward.

Canadian Icon and folk music legend Gordon Lightfoot is currently celebrating his 50th year touring. The tour is called the 50 Year Carefree Highway tour and the fans at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, NY, got to see him perform all of his hits. Some of his band mates have been on tour with him for nearly the entire 50 year duration. Bass player Rick Haynes joined in 1969, drummer Barry Keane joined in 1976, keyboardist Mike Heffernan came on in 1981. The only new addition has been guitarist Carter Lancaster who completed the ensemble in 2011.

Lightfoot took the stage at 8:05 PM and the band went into "The Watchmen's Gone." A man of few words, Lightfoot joked about his death having been overly exaggerated before the band played "Christian Island (Georgian Bay)." Lightfoot is a true poet and his deep meaning lyrics were taken in by the audience. They were hanging on every note being strung and every lyric being sang. I think everyone realized the treasure they were witnessing! Lightfoot switched acoustic guitars a lot throughout the night. I believe he really came into form by the start of the second set. Both "Sweet Guinevere" and "Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald" were highlights of the evening. He got a standing ovation for "If You could Read my Mind."

It was a treat to see Lightfoot perform at Kleinhans. He remarked that even though the band has played there a few times in the past, it was the first time since 1989 that they had been there. He also talked about how Elvis covered one of his songs "Early Morning Rain" and how he got to see him live at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium (1976). He said he was supposed to meet him but by the time he got back to the backstage area, it was announced that "Elvis has left the building." So, in turn, Lightfoot said he never got to meet him.

It's amazing to note that Lightfoot doesn't work with a set list and that he changes up the list every night he plays. His band members need to keep on their toes because they have no idea what will be coming next. This keeps his shows fresh and exciting for his audiences night after night.

that's true-they don't know from song to song what will happen and sometimes during a song.. things change quickly and they are always watching and listening for changes..

If NO is a vote for "YES he should stand up" and NO it does not look odd then I vote NO. At Penn's Peak it was the first time I saw it and it was great. It adds a vitality and newness to the look and the crowd loved it. Carter kept getting applause from those 'in the know' for his lead work if he was sitting or standing. Seeing him and Gord working it on two feet was fantastic. Takes away a bit of the museum piece look that is a danger when everyone is stock still behind the man. Made the whole bunch look 20 years younger!!!

It's NOT odd/wrong!! It's fabulous! it's fun to watch the guys watching Carter as he rocks out with Gord...
Oh yeah -when there's a certain contingent in the audience the guys get their due applause - it's all part of the fun we all have at those shows.

I am writing a fully detailed guide that I will in due course upload to a storage location ( not on my own website right now alas because I am gradually getting through the tedious task of individually editing the 324 pages on my own website that contain elements of HTML Source code that some worthless cretin back in January, having somehow hacked into my website had maliciously inserted extra characters into most of these files that has resulted in an entirely pointless infection that has me branded absolutely erroneously by both Google and its Russian counterpart (http://yandex.com ) as a purveyor of malware, also four times so far my website hosting outfit has "deactivated" my site without the courtesy of warning me or offering any useful advice on what to do
Many thank to Char and Melbourne Dave for alerting me to the problem. I will contact you when the job is done and I have successfully applied to Google to remove their strident warnings so that the problem is solved.
