How about: Keeping Up With The Joneses |
Re: Horse names - Lightfoot inspired
There was a horse who raced in NY a few years ago (maybe 4 or 5 now) whose name was Fortress Strong. I have to assume that he was named for the lyric; nobody else would reverse the words. I bet him all the time, and won a nice bit of money. (He wasn't a stakes horse, but he was honest and won his fair share, usually at 5-1 or better).

And Melissa, funny you mention Wildfire. I have always loved that song. Saw Michael Martin Murphy live a few years ago (he was on a show with Steve & Cindy, or I wouldn't have seen him). Turned out he is a great performer (except for his gratuitous remarks about not worrying about skin cancer). He did a great rendition of Marty Robbins' El Paso, another song I have always loved. He didn't do Pony Man, but he has recorded it, and he also recorded Tennessee Stud. So he's definitely a good guy in my book. He has a "America's Horses" CD which I have displayed somewhere near the top of my Lightfoot site home page. I listen to it often when I travel, and need a change from Lightfoot or Gillette. |

Or perhaps a rural trait in certain pockets of the western world. I ran the fun growing list by some neighbour horse breeders (I'm amidst one if the nation's hot beds, with a bustling track around the corner) for more fun and they dug Alberta Bound and Wishing Well lots. The home stretch her faces more or less westward, and the alliteration and hopeful connotation of the latter, must have struck a chord. Not unique. Not a prereq. But uncommon or unique lyrical phrases was an interesting thread we once had. I cant locate it. The horse farms and tracks here have a future dim. Slots now rule. I dont bet on the ponies or gamble at the casinos. I admire the creatures and study the names and observe the variety of people through the clouds of cig and cigar smoke. |

JJ -
Do you observe it through the smoke cloudy? :) Me, I just have thoughts wishful as I look at the concerts dates and hope for shows more. Melissa :) |
Re: Horse names - Lightfoot inspired
This has turned into a discussion droll.
We should take care though, lest we be accused of beating a horse dead ;) |

not wanting to come across as too anal (it's already too late, lol) but imo, it's not so much the placement of the adjective, it's the elimination of implied words that would otherwise complete a full clause... poetic license, eh... 'a fortress that is strong' comes a horseman wild and free....like a prophet bold....keep 'em coming folks |

There has been some problems with the rights to Wildfire. According to Mary Arnold Miller the widow of Roger Miller, and former singer with Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. Michael Martin Martin sold publishing rights to Wildfire to Roger Miller. Roger then found out that the rights also had been sold to other people. both before and after Roger bought them. It seemed that at one time whenever Murphy would need some money he would sell the rights to Wildfire. This was told at a First Edition reunion in Oct 2011 Michael Martin Murphy and Larry Cansler wrote a much overlooked gem If you want to hear a real neglected masterpiece check out the Ballad of Calico by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. It's a theme album that takes place in a 1880's silver mining town. most of the songs are based on actual events. |
Re: Horse names - Lightfoot inspired

How about Young Stranger? Pretty much anything is better than Orb, though I do hope he wins next week. |

Re: Horse names - Lightfoot inspired
How about:
"Morning Rain" -bound to be an early leader "Something Very Special" "Paper and Tin" - a horse that would run races that only she could win "Love go round" OK, that's enough. |
Re: Horse names - Lightfoot inspired
LOL, Melissa!
And by that I mean, loud out laughing ;) |
Re: Horse names - Lightfoot inspired
Aengus Finnan has many lyrics in his tunes that are like the examples.
He's had a good influence I'm sure.. |
