Original vs Re-recordings.
 

I know there was a thred on this but I couldn't find it.

Anyway, I think most of the originals are the best and while there is a difference in both, in a way there's a like that is the same.

2 songs that are very different between the old and new are Ribbon of Darkness and Wherefore and Why.

Gord really modernised those 2 2nd time around.

as for Ribbon of Darkness, well, i don't like either GG1 medley

Gord had not wanted to cut short IYCRMM for a Grammy's performance, so why he would cut short ROD, DSMMN, FLM and INS on his own album is beyond me

i like all the originals except I prefer the second version (of the 3) of CRT

i do like the slower tempo of some of the re-recordings...for instance, High and Dry (and it up a half tone) but not Gord's voice, the keys and the production in GG2

i really don't like Circle is Small re-recording at all...where did the angst go

oh, i like both arrangements/recordings of TWIF equally, although the vocal of the original is in a whole other league

I pretty much always prefer the first recording. None of the remakes do anything for me.

I do have to make an exception for the Sunday Concert version of CRT which is good as it gets.

Great thread (I remember the original thread too).

I enjoy being able to listen to both the originals and the remakes.

I like the GG Wherefore best. Although I prefer the original Canadian Railroad Trilogy.
Gord's Gold 2 also has some different but great remakes (like The Pony Man).

I wonder how significant which version you heard first is in determining your favourites? 'Gord's Gold' was one of the first albums I ever bought (aged 8, IIRC!) and I'm naturally pre-disposed to preferring those versions (although only CRT and 'Steel Rail Blues' leap out to me as a STRONG preference).

That said, regardless of whether I heard them first or second (it's about a 50/50 split) I can't abide the GG2 re-records, with limp keyboard-washes aplenty and vocals that sound like they were recorded underwater - ghastly!

yeah, but i don't pin that on Mike - he's not at the helm and probably just executing as instructed - i don't know why these keyboard heavy arrangements (and predominance in the live mixes) live on, in what was original known as a jingle jangle band sound - that said, i do like the warm strings in several songs

yeah, joveski, i too like the lower tempo of GG2 for High Dry but thought it should have been left in C# instead of up to D - and i dont miss the Smittie backups

Gord's Gold 2 was the first album I ever had, so all the remakes on that album I heard before the originals (except The Edmund Fitzgerald). It was a whopper when I heard the original Endless Wire for the first time. :cool:

I bought most of them back when they came out. I prefer the older versions also, but will listen to any version, and be happy with them at the moment.

I've heard the original version of Early Morning Rain. Since I'm not a country music fan, I much prefer (and love) the Gord's Gold version of it. Re: The Way I Feel - I like both versions.

^ The original has more of a country feel to it, and I'm just not particularly into country music, that's all. Nothing to do with Gordon's singing voice - I like his voice through the early times and since.

I really prefer the rerecording of "Affair on 8th Avenue" to the original. I find the phrasing of, for instance "and she showed me her treasures of paper and tin" where paper and tin are in a descending cadence as opposed to the ascending cadence in the original to be more pleasing to the ear. The vibrato on "only she could win" is superior in the rerecording, etc. I really over think this stuff. This is an incredibly sexy song and the line "her long flowing hair came softly undone" is just the best. I really don't care what people's sexual orientation is, but this song is a hetrosexual man's dream. So be it.

couldn't have said it better myself! i like gord's originals, because his voice was incredible, but i am happy to listen to any version that plays.

and char, "wow" is an appropriate response to what you posted. what a wonderful voice. thanks for posting it. I wish i could be there.

I've been listening to some of original and remakes.

Most of the originals are the best but I've come to appreciate some of the remakes.


Affair On 8th Ave and Softly though I still like the originals.

Interesting how Gordon changes the verses on the re-recording of Affair.
