Nightime-1st time hearing
I was exploring @ YouTube tonight :headbang: and came across this bootleg audio of NIGHTTIME sung at a Harvard University concert on May 6, 2001. Never heard it before. The user who posted it believes GL wrote it planning to include it in HARMONY. I don't know how to post the actual YT video here so here is the URL:
Although I could not understand all the words, I liked it. Anybody here ever hear this? |
Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
OMG. There's the video. Is that all you have to do?!!! LOL.

This is the Pokeman song (he used to giggle about fitting that word into the song back when he'd introduce it, when he had it in the live rotation a decade ago) Brian came across it recently also http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showthread...hlight=Pokeman but I think there are some earlier discussions about it. The lyrics are at the lightfoot website... mainlandboy1:) |
Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
I remember hearing it back then...and not quite getting all the words...

Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
Nice song - a little like "No Mistake About It". Never cared for "Couchiching" so I guess in my opinion "Night Time" would have been a better track......

Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
Very nice. Thank you for sharing it.

Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
A little bit of "On Yonge Street too, perhaps?

Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
Great to see this up on the site !!!
Took my whole family to Massey Hall (back before you had to have an expensive passport!!!) to see Gord in his 'temple' (not being sarcastic here / I wanted to see him here at least once before I died) in, I think, 2001. I think 'Nightime' was worthy of being added to the 'Harmony' album. I remember liking it after I heard it the first time there. It really stands up to anything else on the album. However my favorite song from that album is still 'River Of Light'. |
Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
Temple is an apt description of "The Church of Gord" on Shuter Street...
;) |
Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
'Nighttime' is one of my favorite Gordon Lightfoot songs. I posted it on Youtube because I thought it was so beautiful it deserved to be heard by more people. Glad to see someone else likes it too...

Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
Wow, thanks Islandgirl1 for the post and jj for the lyrics. Yes... "Nighttime", I had forgotten all about it, but I heard Gord play it live at Massey Hall in May 2001, before 9/11 made it harder to travel to Canada. I seemed to recall some song about the "evening" and he said he wrote it at his new home in North York.

Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
Thanks to peter k also, for making the original post to YouTube.

Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
I also did some exploring at YouTube, and found many new songs I'd never heard before, mostly from the 1960's. These are short folk songs by GL, mostly posted by "guitarman." Good stuff!! And happy 2012. Here's a list:
My love for you Echoes of Heroes Prettiest Time of her life Don't be sorry Sands of time |

yes yes Rick sorry but I have to surmise that if those five are really new to you you cannot be paying enough attention to what is put up here!! Not to mention that full details are available from the cornucopia known as lightfoot.ca For your benefit and for any noobs to whom these are also new I will give some details My Love For You must rank as one of the top "unreleased" songs performed by Gord and was written by Les Pouliot a.k.a Red Shea's brother.I just said "unreleased" which is not strictly true as it is featured not once but twice on the soundtrack of Gord's Hollywood debut movie "Harry Tracy -Desperado'/Last of the Wild Bunch and has been much discussed in these forums and the youtube video has been embedded here at least once see:- http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=22416&highlight=my+love+for+you The other songs on your list mainly feature on the Warner Brothers Demos album Although the great "officially unreleased" song "Echoes Of Heroes" also turns up on Gord's setlist at the La Cave bar in Cleveland Ohio in May 1965. right click the following link then "save target as" to download an mp3 of that performance complete with Gord's intro which reveals his inspiration for writing it:- ftp://www.johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOO..._Of_Heroes.mp3 I said "officially unreleased" because it was included on one of the two Koala albums cobbled together from the La Cave recording as a tax evasion scheme and released for public sale see http://www.raremp3.co.uk/2008/11/gor...r-bootleg.html http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_U1menI3veI...ront+Cover.JPG for reference the complete contents of the WB Demos album is shown on http://www.guitars101.com/forums/f90...-a-104973.html that page shows the total content of 32 songs plus links to a pair of rar format archived files on rapidshare that are no longer there for downloading However that nice Mr Google found me an alternative rapidshare zip file of 180MB at:- https://rs489tl3.rapidshare.com/#!do...FD28D16C69|0|0 using my preferred unzipping tool http://www.jzip.com/jzip_free_zip_so...es/logo-up.gif see my mini tutorial at:- http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showpost.p...46&postcount=2 I now have a folder containing 32 high quality (320MBPS) mp3s totalling a shade under 80 minutes and from which a standard 700MB/80 minute CD of sufficient audio quality to satisfy the majority of fans may be burnt http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/lightfo..._in_Burrrn.jpg |
Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
late breaking news
If that 180MB file download is too much for your internet connection or available storage space there are two alternatives I searched for GL on the uk mp3 site I cited for the Get Together album and found a page for the WB Demos there also at:- http://www.raremp3.co.uk/2009/01/gor...oot-demos.html http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_U1menI3veI...foot+demos.jpg you can then download a single small zip file of a mere 21.8MB that unzips to reveal an all in one mp3 file of only 22.8MB that was sampled at the distinctly Lo Fi rate of only 40KBPS That reminded me that the WB Demos are also available for listening as a streaming file at the sugarmegs website open:- http://tela.sugarmegs.org/alpha/g.html scroll down to find the item or even easier use the browser's find facility to find "warner" click the title to stream or right click the "download" link and then "save target as" to get another all in one file GordonLightfoot1964-66WarnerBrothersDemos.wma of 22.4MB in wma format that was also sampled at a mere 40KBPS as all the downloads from sugarmegs are If you wish to burn a pukka CD then those two 40KBPS files are unlikely to give a satisfactory result. |
Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
I found a few more @ YouTube:
An Old Friend [- I think it is about a dog during childhood. . .] Don't Be Sorry - Sands of Time All of these are from the "Warner Publishing Demos" [1964-1966] My apologies if these were posted here in the recent past. Enjoy. |
Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
you just gotta love that voice, don't ya? makes me sad that I was too young then to have heard, or remembered, Gordon of the 60's era. I think, perhaps, I was also living in the wrong country for I am not sure the early stuff was played down here in the states. But I could be wrong... I was young, after all.
P.S. Thanks for posting NIghttime. Beautiful song. It would be nice to hear that in concert. |
Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
beautiful song, nightime.

Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
On the Official Gordon Lightfoot web page in the unreleased songs section it says:
Lightfoot recorded 23 guitar, vocal demos at Grant Ave. Studio in 2002 prior to falling ill in September of that year. We know the 9 demos that were completed by the band and released on Harmony. Here now are the 14 other songs that were not used for the album. BETTER OFF DO YOU WALK, DO YOU TALK DREAMDRIFT E-MOTION I'M A HOMELESS GUY JUST A LITTLE BIT LAUGHTER WE SEEN OH SO SWEET RETURN INTO DUST SEEMS LIKE FOREVER STREETS WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN WHY NOT GIVE IT A TRY YOU ARE MY DESTINY Does anyone know if any of these recordings have ever been circulated as bootlegs? Or performed live? If a gem like 'Nighttime' could be left unreleased, I wonder if any of these other songs from the same era might be just as good? |
Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
Excellent sluething Peter.
How on earth did you get that list?? We had a vested interest in one of those possible 2002 gems "E-motion you know like e-mail" but although Gord dropped heavy hints on the theme of that song he never would even sing us a tiny segment. When pressed we were told, not by Gord, that it got ruined at Grant Avenue later and was deemed not good enough for release or worth any further work. I have never heard of any bootlegs of these 14. I never understood why Nightime which was caught many times on bootlegs in 2000/2001,usually in very polished form did not join the other two 2001 live concert recordings (The No Hotel and Shellfish) on Harmony, I mean come off it the CD as issued was after all a lot less than the 80 minute capacity of a standard format CD. And surely it would have harmed nobody to give the fans a bit more for their money After I replied i realise that Gord would be somewhat unlikely to release a song called "You Are My Destiny" because surely another Canadian has prior ownership of that title and I don't think that this qulaifies as a bootleg of Gord's song anyway!! |

Lol (j/k) Hey I cant believe a massive bootleg museum curator and a Lightfoot unreleased song trivia master, would not know every inch of our beloved Canadian lightfoot website! Char has given the link below for John and noobs I encourage all to have fun periodically sifting over the Tidbits section that Wayne has put together. That one page alone is a more fun read than the entire bidini book! I agree John. That harmony album is way too short and I could actually have done without the live stuff breaking the mood on there. I would have liked more studio raritues, and more Harmony! The album should have been called "no harmony" Guys, there is a great intro blurb by Wayne and some comments about each of the Warner demos at the lightfoot site. Enjoy. Btw, I got the demos from a generous fellow countrywoman initially but then again right here a few years ago when someone posted the torrents file. Cyberspace can be soooo amayzing.... |
Re: Nightime-1st time hearing
"Where Have You Been" - not a Rihanna cover, I expect. Love Kathy Mattea's "Where've You Been?" - makes me cry every time, remindsme of my own parents. I do hope someday we hear those unreleased songs.
