I enjoy the song myself, but I wonder, though, if anyone who's ever heard the song has ever bothered to really pay attention to the message that was being sent to people by way of that lovely tune? What I learned from it was that there would be a lot less strife in families if parents & children could just somehow learn to communicate with each other. Sad to say, all we ever hear of anymore are people on both sides saying that neither party will listen to what they are trying to say. I agree with the song...we need to try listening to each other & build strong bonds within the family unit before it gets to be too late.

well, unless it was some foolish editor using a false cutaway (i'd never do that! lol) then you do see folks in that cafe playing cards and probably sipping something, perhaps it's afterhours

so yeah, i was just playing on the song title by throwing in the manners comment into the Subject, wasn't suggesting the song message was about teaching manners:) i guess it could be about things getting lost in translation between generations...and learning from the successes or mistakes of those who've come before you...always wondered what does "the one they "picks" ' mean?

luv how these gals freshly phrase & round off lines that we've known for decades

i'm always taken back when i hear French or Chinese (etc etc) start singing English songs and sound so very Anglo North American..then when the song (or karoke) is over they just go back into their undecipherable, native chit chat :)

hey, jj,

your title actually caught my interest as I work with children and their parents daily. the older I get, the more bad manners I seem to see, (me getting old? or reality?) so I thought this thread was made for me! haha, I was pleasantly surprised to find a nice rendition of a song I like. It is amazing that I can barely understand those women when they talk, but their English is dead on for the song. :clap:

I think that what we think is the word "picks" is actually two words--"pick" & "is".

I think the pronunciation when heard sounds like an "S" but it's "ED" picks vs. picked. Picks makes no grammatical sense.It would work if it was "the one HE/SHE pickS" possibly..

It's the "one they pick's" as in "one they pick IS". It is a contraction of "pick is" so pick's, not picks. It needs the apostrophe.

And feed them on your dreams, the one they pick's (pick is) the one you're known by.

I agree with the pick is, as in pick's, theory but I've always thought it was "the one you'll know by" as in the one they pick gives you some insight (know by) into...

But I've been wrong before...

thx, i don't feel so alone now... that's what i've been singing for decades...but i've never looked up lyrics and probably should for the second verse 'round' also...i just mumble safely

strategic mumbling is a useful skill, especially in marriage

This seems to be a complete and correct lyric of the song. I have the songbook from Deja Vu and it matches what's given at the link above. (I must say though that the word "pick's" is correct but the Warner Bros. book does not have the apostrophe which I think is an editing error.)
