Re: Remembering John
Yes, indeed.
Also, today would have been Jim Morrison's 67th birthday. It usually gets overshadowed because of John Lennon, especially with this year being the 30th anniversary of his death.:( Being a big doors fan, thought I'd give a shout out on Jim's behalf as well. redhead:) |
Re: Remembering John
27 was too young for Jim to leave..
He was one of my faves too..moreso than The Beatles. |

Re: Remembering John
I just heard that outgoing Governor Charlie Crist and the Florida State Legislature pardoned Jim for the 1969 indecent exposure conviction this afternoon.
Given how he was so identified with the 1960's counterculture, I'm not sure if he would be pleased to hear this or if he is "spinning" in his grave, lol! redhead |

Re: Remembering John
Well I know I'm late but let me post this for you folks.
This is what I saw (now transcripted) on ABC's Nightline 30 years ago that night, age 12. TED KOPPEL: Good evening, if you've been anywhere near a television or a radio these past few hours, you already know that John Lennon of the Beatles is dead. He was shot late this evening in front of his apartment building in New York City. Apparently, he was killed almost immediately. The man who shot John Lennon, walked up to the musician as he was leaving his limosine. According, to eye witnesses, he said 'Mr. Lennon" and then fired at him, point blank at least 5 times. Standing by now, in New York, is ABC's Lynn Sure. LYNN SURE, ABC News: John Lennon's body was immediately rushed in a police car, here, to Roosevelt hospital, just 13 blocks away from his apartment in upper Manhattan. He was dead on arrival. They tried resuscitation and they tried transfusions, but nothing worked. KOPPEL: John Lennon was shot at a well known New York apartment building, the Dakota House at West 72nd street, and ABC's Rita Sands is standing by at the Dakota, now. Rita, what have you been able to learn since the shooting? Awkard pause. Go your on from background. RITA SANDS, ABC News: Ted, what we know about the suspect at this time, is first of all his identity: 25 year old, Mark David Chapman. He comes from Hawaii, police tell me he's been in the New York area about a week. And began to hang around the Dakota apartment, over the weekend asking about John Lennon. KOPPEL: Chapman, asked John Lennon, or simply said Mr. Lennon, and then pulled out a gun and pumped 5 shots at point-blank range into John Lennon. The singer was killed almost instantly, he was pronounced bed, dead upon arrival of Roosevelt hospital, in New York. By morning, hundreds of John Lennon fans stood out in the dark and the cold, holding candles and singing Beatles songs. |
Re: Remembering John
Ok then - no exposure and I'll look for the stub jj but anyway... I saw the Doors at Madison Square Garden in 1969 when I was 15. The opening act was the Staple Singers who had a big crossover hit at the time - but they were a gospel group at heart. Talk about a mixed audience but it was a great show and it worked!

Re: Remembering John
For extra credit on a quiz last week, I asked my students (age 20 - 22) what the historical significance was of Dec 7, and Dec 8. Out of 21 students 10 knew Pearl Harbor, and 1 knew about Lennon's assassination.
Some chastised me because of cultural reference points for different ages, but hey...know your freaking culture period! |

Just Like Starting Over- John Lennon
#1 for 5 weeks Sun. December 27th 1980 - Saturday January 30, 1981 That's only 8 days away. John's other posthumous solo hits were : "Woman","Watching The Wheels" and 1984s "Nobody Told Me" No surprise Bill that students would think that way. "Hey,were supposed to be talking about this, not that!" To the, that's like "more work!" |

I've never saved ticket stubs. We saw his grave at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris (near the romantic tomb of Abelard & Heloise) & it was a mess... Overrun with graffiti by his *fans* & the bust is no longer there. They've been thinking about kicking his dead bones out of there. |
