once again I've read this story about the Lightfoot kidnapping of 1967..

In 1967, a group of female dorm-mates at Dalhousie University actually nabbed folksinger Gordon Lightfoot, releasing him only after receiving a ransom of canned food for charity.

According to the Chronicle-Herald, Dalhousie girls kidnapped folk hero Gordon Lightfoot and held him for ransom, extorting canned food for charity in exchange for his safe return. A national treasure-napping that would put Nic Cage to shame.
