Heartwarmed at Massey Hall
I'm a few days late to post this, but I have just gotten home (which for me is Vancouver) from my trip to Toronto where I attended the Saturday night concert at Massey Hall.
It was a wonderful concert experience so I wanted to share a little bit. First of all, it was my first time to Massey Hall and for me this was a dream, being that this is where Lightfoot has been playing for decades. It felt like I was experiencing a bit of Canadian history and while watching him on that stage, I imagined what it must have been like seeing him play there 30 years before. If they ever invent time travel...I am first in line for tickets! The Hall itself was a wonderful venue, warm and intimate. I always love the moment when an artist first comes on stage and for this concert it was no different. Lightfoot swaggered onto the stage (that's how I would describe his walk...he has a bit of a swagger) and the crowd went wild. The woman next to me and I were screaming with the biggest smiles on our faces. Pure joy. The music was great and I loved the anticipation of which song he would do next. Near me, I could hear other fans naming the next song after hearing only the first couple chords. Part of what made the whole concert experience so fun was being in a room full of people who adore him as I do. I loved hearing the adoring shouts out to Gordy throughout the show. Hearing him talk about his life and the songs he wrote is almost as good as hearing him play them. Hearing him speak to his daughters on that night was particularly touching. At the intermission, I came down and introduced myself to Char who was easy to find...it was great to put a face to the name and Char, thank you again for this forum and what you give to us. Another favorite part of the concert was where he got the guys in the audience doing loon calls...only at a Gordy concert. And by the way, those were some pretty talented loonies!! lol Overall it was a wonderful evening. When he'd played his last song and the lights came up, I looked around me and I saw many people with the same heart-warmed smile of their faces that matched my own. Around me my concert neighbours and I exchanged comments about which part of the show we liked, this song, that song, and of course about the man himself. Thank you Gordy for everything you've given us. Truly a national treasure and I am glad that I had the honor to see you on Saturday night. |
Re: Heartwarmed at Massey Hall
It was great to meet you and I'm so happy you got to see Lightfoot at HIS place..The Church of Gord sure is special for him and his fans.
The loon calls on Saturday night were quite impressive..I did hear the call of a crow once in a while amongst the loons. And you are right about the Lightfoot swagger..I've described it exactly the same way..I love it! If you have any pics or more memories please share! Glad you are home safe with such wonderful memories to re-live. You may begin to experience PMS any time now...don't worry - we all have it. Post Massey Syndrome is well known to a lot of us - you are not alone.. ;) |
Re: Heartwarmed at Massey Hall
Jenn, it sounds like you had a wonderful time and you still haven't come down from your
Gordon experience. Don't worry, it goes on for years... Seeing Gord and your wonderful time will be your subject of conversation for months or years as it has been for Char and the rest of us to. As far as the PMS (Post Massey Syndrome) goes it quickly escalates into IWTSGLA Fever(I Want To See Gordon Lightfoot Again) which very much a lifelong, but suffering from it myself a very enjoyable malady. Just ask around here who suffers from IWTSGLA Fever(I Want To See Gordon Lightfoot Again)? I know what the vast reply will be. Kevin & Erin |

Re: Heartwarmed at Massey Hall
I just spoke with someone who was at the Friday night show and had never seen Lightfoot - EVER! They have been long time fans tho. They were thrilled with the concert - they loved, loved loved all the songs, even some they didn't know. Their only quandry was the low level of Gord's mic at times. They drove in from Bowmanville and sat down just as the lights dimmed and were captivated from that moment on.
They are now hoping to get to the Peterborough show in April...they're hooked...lol |
Re: Heartwarmed at Massey Hall
Yes, I can definitely relate to the PMS and the IWTSGLA. lol Glad I'm in good company:)
