Re: Concert from 2001 - downloaders read this!

Okay more info. With a little snooping I found the source files

http://tela.sugarmegs.org/bands.aspx

If Lightfoot doesn't show up using the pulldown menu to select him and wait for 15 to 20 seconds. These were the offerings, with the option to listen or download (wow). Have fun.

The '77 show seems to be a new posting! A very cool show, best live 70s Lightfoot I've heard yet.

Re: Concert from 2001

A very nice find Guru,
I repeatedly had a problem getting the drop down artist listing on:-
http://tela.sugarmegs.org/bands.aspx
to reliably appear and stabilise so instead used the artist search box on:-
http://tela.sugarmegs.org/
which was far more useable and produced this screenshot

http://www.johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFO...ch_results.jpg
With particular reference to the two Harvard University concerts in 2001 and 2008
I attended the 2008 one and had previously acquired the 2001 set (albeit in individual track format***) and needed therefore to devise for my personal use a suitable CD jewel case insert
I remembered seeing this fine scholarly pose on Wayne's website taken when Gord received an honorary Law Degree
http://www.lightfoot.ca/degree78.jpg
that photo was taken in either 1979,1978 or June 1977
Yes there is some doubt on the exact year the degree was awarded
on
http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.c...=U1ARTU0002075

1979 is quoted and on
http://www.trentu.ca/admin/library/archives/90-016.htm
it is stated by the university itself (who should be a reliable source)
"Gordon Lightfoot who also received an Honorary Degree from Trent University at Spring Convocation 1979"
Plus the presumably definitive
university pdf
http://www.trentu.ca/administration/...ntList_000.pdf

shows 1979 too
yet Wayne in rare case of a possible inaccuracy
states on:-
http://www.lightfoot.ca/chron03.htm

in the section for 1977 headed by the original photo shown above
"In June he is presented with an honorary law degree at Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario"
However Wayne further confuses the issue by naming his photo "degree78"!!
and "June" might be a tad late for an alleged Spring Convocation!!
I therefore suitably resized and cropped that picture to make it suitable for a CD insert
which has to be 4.75" Wide by 4.72" high which at 96 pixels per inch is 456 by 454 pixels
(the original on Wayne's website is not square and is only 311 by 286
the same as it appears on the university website at):-
http://www.trentu.ca/admin/library/a...s/ztcim075.jpg

Here is my cropped resized (and sepia toned for good measure!) version

http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/i...ia_456x454.jpg
Of course to use this suitable text needs to be added for which as is my wont
I used a great piece of freeware from the UK based Serif Company called DrawPlus downloaded from:-
http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/software/drawplus/

one simply inserts the jpeg then creates text and places it over the main picture
to add a touch of locality I found a free font called "bosox":-
http://www.dafont.com/bosox.font

that nicely mimicked the probably hand drawn font used in the Boston Red Sox logo (a Baseball ahem Rounders team of some repute):-
http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/i...Sox-Poster.jpg
Once you are happy with your design it is an easy task to save your artwork as a jpeg using the freeware screenshot programe
Gadwin Printscreen
For the 2008 concert, somewhere I do not know now where I had spotted a superb photo of a very happy looking Gord taken on the day of the concert
and added some text
http://johnfowles.org.uk/LIGHTFOOT/i...2008_front.jpg
I have shown my completed artwork here as I am fairly sure that the photo was taken by a corfiddler, whereas the "degree" photo is most likely subject to copyright infringement if I displayed my completed CD insert here
whilst google image searching for that picturee
I stumbled upon:-
http://thefiresidepost.com/2008/09/2...don-lightfoot/
and read this fine tribute to The Man
"Gordon Lightfoot is one of the most polite and graceful of all Folk Legends.
He is quiet and unassuming.
We are grateful to have lived in his lifetime.
His music and his life deserve a resurrection."
Here Here!!!!
That is quite possibly the best short summation of Gord's genius that I have ever read.
***Finally I note that all three of the concerts I tested and started downloading comprise one complete Wma (Windows Media Audio) format file whereas usually concerts unacvoidably feature a short but noticeable gap between the tracks whereas the "all in one" wma should produce a continuous concert CD or if you wish a Google (or a BIing should find you a program to separate the tracks . Whichever way you go there is a fine freeware burning program to burn an audio CD directly from any wma files see:-
burrrn.net
yes three "r"s!!!

Re: Concert from 2001

thanks for bringing the link back up, Doug...folks should habitually check for periodis adds

if you search sugarmegs at corfid you'll find prior discussion (including many Sir Fowles tutorials) of the site and specific performances ...Yves posted it back in 2006 then it surfaced again in 2007, etc...i think it's the one where rm helped us download mp3 formats of that clean Filmore's East gig

http://www.corfid.com/vbb/showthread...ight=sugarmegs

any folks stumbled across previous unheard live recordings for referencing? i remember the excitement of hearinf Unsettled Ways live for the first time..i wasn't attending many ( i was watching romper room) gigs during that era

Oops
I got carried away
burrrn whilst a superb little program does not I think handle wma files
I have mainly used it for burning CDs directly from the FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) format losslessly compressed files most often found in concert torrents
But all is not lost just fiollow the instructions on
http://www.ehow.com/how_5073503_conv...wma-files.html
and use Windows Media Player
