Heaven dont deserve me anyway..

i was wondering about this before while listening the songbook rarities...

is he trying to say that he doesnt deserve to be in heaven, or, he's too good for heaven?

it can have both meanings!. there's one to rack your brains for!

Well, I hate to say it but I think the context of the line to the rest of the song is that Heaven doesn't deserve him - too good for it. Almost sounds as thought the protagonist in the song is expressing his sentiment from feelings of hurt...Gonna have to have another look at this...

It really is both, if we're to believe the horse's mouth. In the notes to the Songbook, GL writes: "You can take it two ways. Maybe it's that I would be too much of a pain in the butt and that I would cause unneeded hassles up there. Or you can take the other tack and say 'Maybe I'm too good for it.' Or maybe I'd just prefer to be 6 feet under and forget about the whole thing. If I have an opportunity to believe in heaven, then I choose to believe. It's [the song] is very philosophical and kind of light."

In light of his present tour schedule, I would have to say that it should be "Alabama don't deserve me, anyway".......

i love this kind of GL response...i also love his typical response when asked about general lyric interpretations or what a particular song is really about: "i could tell you...but then it wouldn't be yours...."

i agree and it's one reason i don't miss Gord having not delivered reems of videos to support his songs over the years...imo, video interpretations really put a damper on one's imagination...i don't mind Inspiration Lady since it's mostly a series of vague images, with a hint of storyline within but nothing that would over ride one's initial personal interpretation

one day, Gord deserves to be reunited with lost loved ones as well as other treasured artists who have moved on, wherever that may be....i don't know about 6 ft under, how about an urn placed within a CYC set adrift somewhere in the NWT...sorry, just trying to lighten up a pretty morbid thread

That's one that tends to make me think too much. When I think too much, I get a rotten headache. Still, it does make a person kinda curious about what it means.
