Rockford IL 3/21/09 review

Hello all,
Fresh in from the show! (ok, it's actually the next morning as I type this) Sorry, no set list from me... hopefully someone else will chime in with the list. Arrived at The Coronado Theater... pleasantly surprised, as it was even more beautiful than I had envisioned. Weather was great! Once inside, was even more impressed with this grand old theater! (I hope to return in the future). The house was pretty well packed! I couldn't see the balcony, but the main floor seemed full! Once the show began, I was really pleasantly surprized how well the guys were doing towards the end of a strenuous March tour. Gord's voice hasn't been so good since his return in 2005! I mean it! He really sounded great! He noted his last concert in Rockford was 27 years ago, and it was good to be back. I suppose the highlight for me was when Gord introduced The Ponyman by request for "Margret" (at least that's what I think he said)... I believe Gord misspoke, as Emma and I wrote to him over a month ago and requested The Ponyman for this show. Gord gave a brief "history" of The Ponyman as a children's story and how the 'book' came out with artwork that wasn't what he had envisioned ( here's a link: http://www.lightfoot.ca/gltext.htm ) . The request was really for Emma (age 5), who unfortunately had fallen asleep by the time Gord did the request! dang! Still, it was awesome!!! Hopefully others who were there will chime in with their thought's and pictures... It was without a doubt the best performance, all around, in years... Great to see for sure. ps, Minneapolis, MN, (tonight's show) you're in for a treat!!! The guys are in fine shape!! |
Re: Rockford IL 3/21/09 review
thanks for the review!
nice pic, nice entrance to that place i never thought a 5 year old could sit still for a concert like this...how far into the gig did she make it awake and was she Restless while awake? glad you got to hear Ponyman I'm sure someone with a cellphone recorded it and will post to youtube so Emma can listen belatedly:) i agree, that Ponyman book artwork is unsettling..the cover reminds me when of a scene that used to haunt me from that Pinocchio flick where he and a sidekick grow those donkey ears as some sort of punishment for playing pool and smoking cigars, etc...hmmm, I notice our Ponyman is smoking a pipe... concert goers, have fun in Minnesota, eh:clap: |

Wow, Peter Bro10 your post was so fun to read. Happy to hear the guys and Gordon are sounding so good. Hopefully Emma will get to hear/see "The Pony Man", soon either from You Tube or posted on this board. :)

Glad you had a great time. I hope going to the concert helped. At least it took your mind off your recent loss for a couple of hours. Yes the Coronado is a great old movie palace I remember seeing How the West Won much different then the megaplex of Today. Much like the Adler in Davenport which used to be the RKO. A classic site with great accoustics. When the renovation of the Adler was going on, Gordon gave a benefit concert and gave a check for $5,000 to help.

Kevin,
Yes, it was a nice reprieve from an otherwise sorrowful week. As we drove through a part of Rockford that reminded Mom of trips she would take with my sister to pick up supplies for making floral arrangment, of which my sister was very well known for. Mom would cry for a bit, but then we got to the Coronado and she managed to leave it behind for a time. Mom thoroughly enjoyed the show as well. It was an extremely rough week, soothed by finishing with a Lightfoot concert. The best gift this son can give his mother! |
Re: Ft. Wayne, Indiana
The bulk of the set list is the same as the Champaign set list from 3-18-09, so I took the liberty of doing a "copy and paste" here. the only exception I can see off hand is that "The Pony Man" was early in the second set about #19 I think. "Make way for the Lady" was taken out and "If children had wings" followed "The Pony Man". So it should look alot like this. Thanks to Kelly for the Champaign list!
anyhow, it's real close to this... though somehow I recall "Clouds of Loneliness" being in there somewhere... 1. Cotton Jenny 2. Carefree Highway 3. Sea of Tranquility 4. 14 Karat Gold 5. Never Too Close 6. Minstrel of The Dawn 7. Let It Ride 8. A Painter Passing Through 9. Rainy Day People 10. Shadows 11. Beautiful 12. The Watchman's Gone 13. Ribbon of Darkness 14. Sundown 15. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald ( intermission) 16. Triangle 17. Hangdog Hotel Room 18. Restless 19. The Pony Man 20. If Children Had Wings 21. Waiting For You 22. If You Could Read My Mind 23. Don Quixote 24. Baby Step Back 25. Early Morning Rain 26. Blackberry Wine (encore) 27. Old Dan's Records |

I came upon this list at Wayne's site, and I figure it's more 'reliable' than my initial guesstimate. I've taken the liberty of numbering them... so here you are.
1. Cotton Jenny 2. Carefree Highway 3. Sea Of Tranquility 4. 14 Karat Gold 5. Never Too Close 6. A Painter Passing Through 7. Let It Ride 8. Rainy Day People 9. Shadows 10. Beautiful 11. The Watchman's Gone 12. Ribbon Of Darkness 13. Sundown 14. The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald intermission 15. Triangle 16. Hangdog Hotel Room 17. Clouds Of Loneliness 18. The Pony Man 19. If Children Had Wings 20. Waiting For You 21. Minstrel Of The Dawn 22. If You Could Read My Mind 23. Restless 24. Baby Step Back 25. Early Morning Rain 26. Blackberry Wine encore 27. Old Dan's Records It was one GREAT SHOW!!!! If only it were available on DVD!!! I was tempted to holler out if there were any Corfidians in the house prior to the show, but I lacked the nerve... After all, we Lightfoot fans are dignified folk! |
