Question about GL lyrics...

I know this is more of Lightfoots fine poetry at work here, but in the song "If You Need Me":

"But if you need me
Show me a way to get through
Cause I've not see anyone like you
Since I was a man"

but when he says "since I was a man", what exactly is he saying? Is he no longer consider himself a man anymore? Or could it mean he no longer considers himself a young man?

Re: Question about GL lyrics...

I believe he means "since he's been a man" (matured?)
That is how I've always read it. That is an excellent, though unheralded song.

Since I was a man - hmmmmm.
I take this to mean since he 'became' a man..probably in the 'biblical' sense..
;)

I always figured it dealt with when he grew up from boyhood to manhood. Good song, anyway.....
