49 songs from north of the 49th parallel
 

An interesting revelation this morning on Tom Allen's CBC radio 2 program is that Gordon Lightfoot's "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" is far ahead of all the songs listed for this project.

It's quite nice to hear the many diverse tunes being played at the beginning of the day by Canadian artists. Sort of helps pick up the "lift" during these early wet and dreary January mornings.

There is some negativity in the commentary but overall it's a favorable gig.

Which songs defining Canada should flow from the headphones of incoming U.S. president Barack Obama?

CBC Radio is asking Canadians to help create a playlist for the president-elect, titled “49 Songs from North of the 49th Parallel.”

Orillia’s own Gordon Lightfoot has made the shortlist of 100 songs with Canadian Railroad Trilogy and Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

“One of the best ways to know Canada is through the depth and breadth of our artistic expression,” CBC Radio’s executive director, Denise Donlon, stated on the radio’s website. “We're excited about the new president and we want him to be excited about us, so we're asking our audience to help compile the list of our most definitive Canadian songs!”

Let’s make sure Obama listens to the best Canada has to offer by voting for Lightfoot at http://www.cbc.ca/radio2/obamasplaylist. You have until Friday, Jan. 16, at 11 p.m. to vote.

The final 49 songs will be unveiled on Inauguration Day, Tuesday, Jan. 20, with selected tunes played throughout the day on CBC Radio 2's daytime programs, including RADIO 2 MORNING, TEMPO, RADIO 2 DRIVE and TONIC, stated the CBC Radio website.

Yes, "American Woman" made the list. So did others you'd expect, like Stompin' Tom's "The Hockey Song," and some you might not, like Parachute Club's "Rise Up."
Canadians have chosen 49 songs for President-elect Barack Obama's playlist that help define this country north of the 49th parallel. The list was compiled by more than 130,000 votes over two weeks by listeners of CBC's Radio 2.
"This is a unique and diverse list that represents a wide variety of artists and songs, both historic and current," says Denise Donlon, executive director of English radio. Tops in jazz was Oscar Peterson's "Hymn to Freedom"; Glenn Gould's "Goldberg Variations" was top of the classical heap; Rush's "Closer to the Heart" was No. 1 among pop/rock, urban or country songs; and Gilles Vigneault's "Mon pays" was the favourite francophone tune.

Maybe I missed this earlier, around his birthday, but I enjoyed reading the blog re "what should Gordon Lightfoot write about now" posted alongside the list of songs. Of course - in answer to one request - he did already write about rich old men sending young men off to war (The Patriot's Dream). And thanks, Ron Jones, for pointing out Gord's paid his dues and written more than enough for any songwriter. If he chooses to write again, God bless him and hooray for us, but if not we've got a treaasure-trove as it is.
