Hi folks!
Hey everyone! I'm not too sure if I'm putting this in the right spot, so my apologies if I'm not. I came across the link for this site in a facebook group, and here I am! So, for my stats...my name is Nikki...I'm 22 and I love Gordon Lightfoot. I also love Blue Rodeo, Paul Simon (I named my dog "Paul Simon"), James Taylor, Bob Dylan, CCR...pretty much all the music that came out before I was even born :) I grew up listening to Gordon Lightfoot, and it just kind of carried over. I'm seeing him in April for the first time, and I'm so excited. I know I'm gonna cry.

Re: Hi folks!
Hi Nikki,
Nice that you are a fan of such great music :) I saw Gordon for the first time in April. It was a wonderful experience. He is truly a great talent and wonderful performer. Awesome to share the same space with him for a couple of hours and hear him sing. Glad you are here. Lots of friendly people and a wealth of knowledge about Gordon and his music. Have fun :) |
Re: Hi folks!
Welcome Nikki ! Glad to have more friendly folk to echange witty
reparte...naw...! - more like down-to-earth Rainy Day People, you'll be glad you came here, its a nice family of friends. My musical interests are pretty similar to yours. If I had to take one decade of music stranded on a desert isle, it would definately be the 70's. Lightfoot accounts easily for over 3/4 of my listening time at home; I like some old Rock when I'm driving in addition to The Man. I like Old Gold American Standards, primarily by contemporary artists, with Big Band as the theme for their indivual dive into oldies - like Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt, Natalie Cole, Harry Connick, Nancy La Mott, etc. What is Blue Rodeo like ? I keep hearing more and more in corfid here about them. What would you compare them to , if you had to come close ? Do you like facebook ? Like everything, I have heard both cautionary statements about facebook; but I have also heard the same, especially lately about MySpace, which I am a member of, very inactive, except for a few friends and family on it spread around the country. I like the analogy applied to facebook and MySpace, and the like, that is used often to describe the internet in a broader-stroke; as a dynamic, extremely diverse, driver and buyer and surfer beware, but not so much you don't have fun. Moreover, the analogy goes on to its main part - that of the internet being compared to a large city. There are beatiful parks, gardens, museums, aquariums, theatres showing good and bad movies, and countless things healthy and fascinating. And, it is also said on the flipside to be a world of 'evils' when downloading the wrong file, opening the wrong file, hyperlinking to the wrong site, copying, purchasing, etc. And for every good exit off the internet highway, there is a bad exit, the one you regret taking 1/4 mile off because the signs were poorly thought out - and you get caught under an overpass, at night, in a dark, dingy industrial part of town- and you've got a flat tire. No point changing it if you driving a nice car or SUV (if its my truck, no worries - lol), or are poor at defending yourself or under- equipped to do so; just raise all the windows, lock all the doors, and call for help on your cellphone, cause even if you survived changing the tire, by the time you got back in the bad guys would have stolen your tires, wheels, hubcaps, halogen lights, and you'd be up on blocks, and not even know it til you were done wiping the grease off your hands I don't think its categorically dangerous anymore than I think it is categorically safe. You and every one else knows this, except for those who are not familiar with the internet and have just heard horror stories about it. The only reason I mention these truisms is that the same argument seems to be going on now about MySpace, and FaceBook, and a bevy of niche interest mega-blogs. Six months ago I heard 'facebook is BAD news - stay out of IT, man'. Then 6 months later, I hear 'MySpace is the one that is really going down hill' . Phooey. Common sense, healthy skeptical optimism seems a safe steady course. I know were it not for MySpace, I would not be a cyber 'friend' of one of Lightfoot's previous 15 year veteran band members - PeeWee Charles, he has a fascinating site with a song he composed the arrangement for, as a Eulogy and inspirational song regarding 9/11. Very friendly guy, and quite open to talking with us Lightheads. With near 2,000 of us in corfid alone, I don't see how he does it ! Well, welcome again; and I would like to hear your thoughts on facebook. Good to have you ! |

Re: Hi folks!
Thanks guys! I'm glad you guys have the GL knowledge. All the knowledge I've picked up was from the Songbook box set, and wikipedia, haha.
As for my favorite songs, there's tons of them...I find the songs that I usually skip over on my ipod, and then give a chance listen to are the ones I love. Like, I never really gave Summer Side Of Life a chance, but when I did listen to it, I loved it. I do love Same Old Loverman, I'd Do It Again, Steel Rail Blues, If It Should Please You, I'm Not Supposed To Care, Canary Yellow Canoe...lol...the list goes on and on and on. As for Blue Rodeo...well, they rock. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Jim Cuddy is so hot :) When I saw them I cried so hard! My dad took me for my birthday...he was so embarrassed..."Are you CRYING?!?! I'll give you something to cry about! I'll throw you over the balcony!" ahh, good times. It was because of that, he said he would be damned if he went to Gordon Lightfoot with me. I don't mind facebook. Its good for keeping in touch with family and whatnot. You just have to be careful. I don't know how the viruses and stuff end up on there. My friend ended up with a bunch of spam and advertisements on her "wall" for awhile there. Hey, so do you guys know if GL, sticks around after a show to sign autographs or anything? I told the woman I'm going to the concert with that if I ever met him, I would get him to sign my arm and then I would go out and get that tattooed :) |
Re: Hi folks!
yeah I had to hold back on the temptation to ask Gordon to sign me...I quickly realized there weren't any smooth writing surfaces remaining.
|
Re: Hi folks!
great reply Nikki:) and if you want to use that Search feature here it is pretty simple...you could put in Blue Rodeo or Tattoo for some interesting past discussions and pics...i've never heard of getting an autograph tattooed, that would be quite something!
and char and others have posted wonderful stories of their after concert close encounters of the Gord kind, tons of photos to see in the archives of Gord sharing his post-gig time:) |

i actually saw Jim Cuddy sign the broad side of a woman's boob while i was waiting in line for him to sing something for a big fan from Boston...Gord might go for it...sign, seal and even deliver (i have no idea what that means, lol) |

Re: Hi folks!

Re: Hi folks!
Gordon told me that in September when I gave him a 'too big' "Large" T-Shirt as an early Birthday gift..
I think I mentioned it in the BUFFALO report back then... |
Re: Hi folks!
Hi Nikki! What part of the world are you from? I would assume Canada with the Blue Rodeo/Jim Cuddy thing going on. I was 18 when I first heard Gordon- and I hated it! It was not until a year or so that the music began growing on me. I have loved it ever since and I am 31 now. I have seen him in concert four times and met him three. He is a super guy and is very accomodating as far as autographs and pics go.
Here's hoping your Dad never throws you off a balcony! |
Re: Hi folks!
I'm in Edmonton, Alberta. Currently -35 with the windchill :(
Anyway...you know, from what I've read so far, Gordon seems like a very nice guy when it comes to autographs and whatnot. Hopefully it works out. Jim Cuddy signed the woman's boob? Really!? That's awesome. Hahaha...I met Ron Jeremy at a strip club back in my younger days, and he signed my boob. Not something I would get tattooed though...that's not something I don't think I would really want to remember. Nice guy and all, but...*shudder* |
Re: Hi folks!
Ron Jeremy, eh? Ha ha! You sound like a spirited person. I am from wwwaayyy down south in the land of cotton. Jackson, Mississippi is my home. I have always wanted to visit Alberta, though. I have been to 43 states and 1 province (Ontario). When I first started college, I wanted to go to the University of Alberta.
I had a cousin who was obsessed with Ron Jeremy. Lord knows why. That guy could have any number of .. uh .. maladies. Gordon is a great guy. I have a couple of autographs of his, 1 from Terry Clements and 1 from Mike Heffernan. All the guys in the band are fun to talk with. If you're a musician, they love to talk shop, too. I talked with Mike for half an hour about his keyboard setup once. Anyhoo, I better get back to work. |
