Analogy with a twist

Preface : I know some Canadian artists, but I don't feel qualified to fill in any blanks. So, for those who do........fill in the blank :

Elvis Presley is to America as (fill in the blank) is to Canada.

Here's another :

Frank Sinatra is to America as (fill in the blank) is to Canada.

No answers are right or wrong.

Re: Analogy with a twist

Well, I can't do your blanks but I have a couple of my own :)

The Beach Boys are to America as Blue Rodeo is to Canada.

Loretta Lynn is to America as Anne Murray is to Canada.

I will have to think about it some more...lol. It's more difficult than I thought.

I will stick with my Elvis is to America as Gordon Lightfoot is to Canada.

Yuri,

We gotta intoduce these fine people to some good old rock music, LOL. I mean how about Johnny Winter is to America as ________ is to Canada.

Mountain is to America as ________ is to Canada.... etc.

Random examples for sure but you know what I mean man !

Bill :)

MaryAnn ?

(Just kidding) I've never heard of Mountain. Learn something new every day.

I think we're gonna need a little help from Canadians.

RM - Never heard of the headbangin' power quartet from the late '60's??? You must have heard their big hit 'Mississippi Queen'? with the infamous cow bell intro. One of my favorite bands of that era.

Long Islander Leslie West on Guitar, Steve Knight on keyboards, Montreal native Corky Laing on percussion and one of my favorite bassists, Felix Pappalardi, on everything else. Felix was classically trained in orchestration at the University of Michigan and idolized Bach. Felix was also a dynamite producer and is credited for helping the power trio 'Cream' reach full potential with his production, arrangement, writing and musicianship on a number of their albums.
Sadly, womanizing Felix was shot by his wife in the 80's and Steve is no longer with the band. Leslie and Corky still tour with bassist Ritchie Scarlett. Four photos attached which I took at a Toronto Hard Rock Cafe performance a few years ago.

One piece of trivia that links this hard rock Mountain to Gordon Lightfoot is that David Rea is given credit as one of the composers 'Mississippi Queen' (above). Hard to believe this same David Rea also performed with Gordon Lightfoot.
From Valerie Magee's fine website she writes:
“David Rea played guitar on Lightfoot's first album in 1965, featuring such great songs as "Ribbon of Darkness", "Early Morning Rain", and "The Long River". David's guitar riffs on the Lightfoot album are instantly recognizable“.

Bill W,
Johnny Winter is to America as ________ is to Canada. (the late Dominic Troiano?)

Mountain is to America as ________ is to Canada.... etc. (Rock Gods, nobody north of the 49th compares to Mountain!!

Peace Man!

No. I listened to the song and it didn't ring a bell (no pun intended). However, I do have a headache now.

Thanks for bringing up the David Rea connection. This thread should have been posted in the Small Talk forum, but after I realized my mistake I was unable to delete my initial post.

Bang your head against the nearest wall for 60 seconds, when you stop it won't hurt anymore. And you'll forget the original pain. Like GL - Mountain is not for everyone. But Yuri and I would have sat at the same table at lunchtime in High School so I had to bring it up. My young friends liked 'em both - we walked the diversity walk that today's polticians only talk the talk, LOL. Sorry for going so far afield...

Bill :)

Yes, but who is filling in all the blanks?

Mountain is to America as ???? is to Canada????

Yuri...lol :) Celine is okay but just not my favorite singer.
Who can we compare her to?

Whitney Houston comes to mind. Both ladies have amazing power to their voices.

Okay Canadians...what about Ron Sexsmith?
I don't know much about his popularity in Canada.
Would this work?
Jimmy Buffet is to America as Ron Sexsmith is to Canada.

Both have a very laid back style and mellow voice. Jimmy has a cult following but I am not sure about Ron.

Okay, Let's turn this one around.

The late Jeff Healey was to Canada as _____________ is to America.

For those unfamiliar with Jeff's talent & playing style, I challenge you take a deep breath and check out this video.

I think Buble is a cutie, sings well, and has some catchy tunes but he won't ever have the legacy of Sinatra..he's making David Foster a crapload of money tho.. lol

How about this ?

Barbra Streisand is to America as Celine Dion is to Canada.

This thread was a terrible idea. First I got a headache and now I feel nauseous.

Yes you might be right on with that one Char, but I guess when I see his style, he reminds me of someone like Mr. Sinatra.

I'm not a big fan of either Barbra or Celine but admire their rise to fame, what they've accomplished. I do love Barbras' acting/movies...she was great! ...podunklander
Same here I am not a fan of either Celine or Barbra. I dont dislike them, just not my type of music. I prefer Celine singing in french, her Album "Deux" is very good. That was before she hit" Las Vegas,"and the rest of the world. She always said that she wants to do acting...

I know that our dear "Char" is a big fan of Celine... eh Charline ! ! ! lol

Hey Yuri, this would be a difficult one to answer. Jeff Healey may have been in a class of his own ??? :)

To me for Gordon Lightfoot, I can only think of Bob Dylan.

Now if Gordon was a Country Singer...maybe Willie Nelson ? Three great songwriters.

Ma'am, I don't know. As I've already stated, this has to be one of my worst ideas ever.

I THINK I was initially leaning toward iconic musicians.

Let me try this one.........

George Strait is to America as Ian Tyson is to Canada.

charlene 12-07-2008 06:39 PM

Re: Analogy with a twist

see...THINKING never comes to a good end..
lol
it's an interesting topic..I too have a headache..nausea is being held at bay for the time being..
I'd say the George Strait/Ian Tyson works pretty good..
I'm a fan of both..even if George just basically stands there and sings..lol
they both look good in hats too..
;)
