Northern Lights / Tears Are Not Enough !

Re: Northern Lights / Tears Are Not Enough !
Some of this video is absolutely dreadful. The song has a wonderful sentiment, but some of those 80s only type performances are enough to send me to the throne of vomit for a purge.
Gordon, Burton and Joni are certainly the tops in the crowd, but the whole thing wreaks of David Foster and his MTV ilk. I am glad that Foster respects Lightfoot, but his respect was a bit misdirected in the 80s. He always wanted to update the Lightfoot sound and change what needed to be left alone. "Anything For Love" was their only effort together, and for that, we can all be thankful. If Gordon had allowed Foster to shape his career in the MTV age, we would have only seen pathetic results, with Gordon looking like an old timer wanting to be again. Gordon's music is timeless. It should be left that way. Anyways, I don't believe this song raised nearly the money that "We Are the World" did. But, it was a great thought. Man, the 80s just wasn't a good time for any singer/songwriters. It was all about bands, shredding guitars, synth and big hair. Gordon, Burton and Joni look out of place for sure. |

i agree with you spock...of course GL is accountable for all his past production decisions and i'm glad he gave his head a shake at some point during that episode...foster knows what the general masses like and he's surely a talent in many areas but we all agree we are not the general mass...i know some folks (gals actually) that've said 'yeah, i know that guy, i really love that ship song and that anything for love song' lol
i liked the first 30 seconds of both the canadian and usa arrangements the most...actually, that's all i liked, i'm not into the singalong chorus type things but they suited the purpose...bryan adams did a good job as always....btw, i enjoyed the documentaries yes, even per capita, the usa version raised about 2x that of the cancuk version ($3M)...hats off to all who participated and gave a donation during any of these drives...if not, rest assured that much of our tax dollar goes toward humanitarian relief...and the rest goes towards roads and wardrobes:) does anyone know if either of these versions got a freshening up? the UK's 'Do They Know it's Christmas' did...i kinda like the new one this was the largest selling single in UK history before the Lady D song wouldnt' you love to see Gord open up a 2008 version of Tears are not Enough? i would also love it if they just deleted the bridge section this go round trivia: how many of these 80's artists from either of the 3 versions, are not with us anymore? one thing we can all agree on : Dylan's incredible 8 seconds in We Are The World was the highlight of any of the 3 tunes, lol :) |
