CCC Day 75th Anniversary

What a great day and I’d like to share this!

In recognition of the 75th anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps (1933-1942) a ceremony was held today at the Old State House in Boston, Massachusetts. Several “CCC Boys” were in attendance! The Massachusetts General Assembly and the Department of Conservation and Recreation sponsored this event.

A very worthy recognition. I became aware of their handiwork while doing summer work for the forest service in Flagstaff, AZ.

Found a little bit about a Flagstaff camp on the National Park Service website..but most likely the camp in Flagstaff was a US Forest Service camp:

Reforestation efforts were spearheaded by CCC enrollees who built the Fort Valley Nursery on the Coconino National Forest in Flagstaff, AZ. [35] Some crews collected bushels of pine cones from the Coconino and Sitgreaves Forests while other crews prepared the seed for planting and tended young seedlings. Two-year-old seedlings were transplanted on burned or logged forest lands. [36] Camp F-5-A in Flagstaff was responsible for building a 200,000-gallon concrete reservoir to supply the nursery's water needs. [37]

There will be a free CCC exhibit at the South Rim Village Kolb Studio from 5/31-10/31. And from 5/31-6/1 the exhibit kicks off with a symposium and history walks:

One of the speakers has written more about the Flagstaff CCC.

Does this mean that you'll buy my book [if it ever gets written!]?

Sure why not, Im not one to read that many books though. Except of course books about Gordon Lightfoot. And those are really rare. Gord once said in an interview w/ Don Harron, that one day he might write a book about his canoe trips. But this was back in the early 80's. He called his canoe adventures, " isolation in isolation." To me that would be a great title for such a book. :)

Pam, I'd buy your book if you wrote one. Levi's dad worked for the Soil Conservation Service, my sister was in Federal Forestry, and I'm certified in Natural Resources. My son Levi studies renewable energy. He found this video. You might like to see it.

My grandfather once worked for the CCC just before he signed up to serve in the Navy. He didn't have to, because of his age, but he did it anyway.
