A late farewell to "Kinch" / Ivan Dixon
Yet another cast member of Hogan's Heroes has left us. Ivan Dixon who played "Kinch" (short for the last name Kinchole) passed away this past March 16th.
Aside from that show,he was in many guest appearences on many TV shows, the last being "Father Dowling Mysteries" in 1991. He only made 10 movies butthe most notable 3 are,"A Patch Of Blue" & "A Raisin In The Sun (both w/ Sidney Poitier) and the 1976 comedy "Car Wash",his last movie. He left Hogan in the second to last season, most likely tired of the grind of playing the same thing all those years. Seeing his work in those movies,I can't blame him. Rest In Peace Ivan, your part in Hogan's Heroes was minimal but still important and your scenes with Sidney are the stuff great acting is about. |

Yeah the Hogan's Heroes part wasn't showy but how many black communications specialists were there - even fictional - on network TV in the day (other than Uhura on Star Trek)? He was at home on the stage in many productions, including as co-star in A RAISIN IN THE SUN way back in 1959. He left HH because he felt under-utilized in the role (true). He went on to direct in TV and film, occasionally acting. He owned and operated a radio station in Hawaii for a number of years.

With what seems to be a trend with celebrities,Dixon passed on just days before turning 76.
Just as sad,I read at CNN.com that Richard Widmark passed away last night. I'm not really familiar with his movies but I liked his guest shot on "I Love Lucy". He was 93. RIP Here's all that remain from the main cast of Hogan's Heroes: Richard Dawson Robert Clary Kenneth Washigton (the second Kinch) :( |
Re: A late farewell to "Kinch" / Ivan Dixon
I was going to ask how many are still with us from Hogan's Heroes. I knew that it couldn't be many. So Border you answered my question before I could ask it. { ESP maybe?) Thank you very much B. :)

Actually,I left one out but I can't recall her name. She played Klink's secretary but I also can't recall if she was the first or the second actress to play her.
