Favorite Red Shea Licks?
I'm a big fan of Red Shea's guitar licks on the early GL albums. I think the ones I could listen to anytime are:
"Did She Mention My Name" "On Susan's Floor" "Leaves of Grass" Anyone else have some favorites? Don |
Re: Favorite Red Shea Licks?
Those are all great ones. In my opinion, it doesn't get any better than the last part of the Canadian Railroad Trilogy.

Re: Favorite Red Shea Licks?
this is a lovely sampling of the Lightfoot trio-Gord with the big hair/little mustache. LOVE the "2,3,4," as he strums, and the recognition of his mates..one of my fave clips and songs..hmmm..perhaps another song 'suggestion' for upcoming concerts??

Re: Favorite Red Shea Licks?
I agree totally about Red Shea....as tasteful as any guitarist I've ever heard. The two favorites that come to mind are 'Miguel' and 'If You Could Read My Mind'.

There are so many, "Rosanna" comes to mind right now. :)

Re: Favorite Red Shea Licks?
Red and Terry were actually both playing on On Susan's Floor. It is a wonderful solo that Terry duplicated with sublty on a couple of shows back in 98. My favorite Red licks are in the category of accents, not necessarily solos. The playing on If I Could really adds flavor to the song. Also, Red plays IYCRMM a bit of a different manner than Terry. The licks are subtle in places but a little louder and more numerous in the choruses. And of course, you can't beat the octave playing on Apology (at the end).

Red Shea plays the lead acoustic, classical & Telecaster (Fender Electric) guitars, on the "Cold On The Shoulder" Album.
Meanwhile Terry plays lead acoustic guitar, while Gord plays the 6 & 12 string acoustic guitars... :) |

New to forums here, and my favourite licks are from Your Loves Return, I play guitar and am attempting to learn them. Nothing on the internet to give me any ideas though.

Re: Favorite Red Shea Licks?
I have just about every GL album ever released--ALL the United Artists stuff---I think the best Red Shea virtuoisty--or at least my favorite---is "Long Thin Dawn" on the "Back Here on Earth" album---turn down the base line (they're separated--sorry John Stockfish--it's great and all, but...) and turnup Red's lead...He simply goes beserk with delicate riffs, hammers---simply unmatched genius. I've been listening to it for about 40 years and I'm still blown away...
Red apparently was even a better human being and father...Absolutely no one has anything even slightly negative to say about him...How often does that happen in show biz? Sleep well Red. |
Re: Favorite Red Shea Licks?
Welcome to CORFID {The Gord Board} Lonesometroubadour & Ol' Pharte. :)

Re: Favorite Red Shea Licks?
Welcome to the two new folks!
from what I've heard from several people who knew Red quite well he was a gentle man and very down to earth, a devoted family man and a spiritual man. He was humble and had a sense of humour as well. He sounds like a fine sort of fellow to have known.. |
Re: Favorite Red Shea Licks?
The high string (Nashville Tuning) guitar on "Ode to Big Blue" is pretty amazing stuff.
