Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

Today is Martin Luther King's birthday. He was a great man. Let us not forget his DREAM and the many lessons he taught us.

His dream was, and is, a beautiful one. The thing that I don't understand, and somehow I don't think that he would either, is the closing of schools & government offices on his birthday. From where I stand, I think that he might have figured that one of the best, and definately most non-violent ways of fighting the injustices that are out there is to get an education, an education that would enable our best & brightest young minds to find equally non-violent ways of obtaining social justice & ending once & for all the hatred that is still out there in some form or other. Anyway, I think what I'm trying to get at is that our young people can't get that all so important education if they're out of school? I've even spoken to kids & asked them what they think about it all, and was surprised to find that most kids apparently don't know what the man & his message were all about. All they see is just one more day off from school so that they can set around the house either playing games, napping all day, hanging out with their friends in some way shape or form, or just generally watching television. People, you need to, as the song goes, teach your children well.

People I work with also see it as 'another day off WORK'. You'd think older people would know more about him, but it's just grade school all over again. :(

I really can't say I know a whole lot about him myself. I know he wanted to end segregation (separating people because of their skin color) and to prevent anyone of a certain race looking down on another person of a different race. I wish we had more people like him.

that was nicely said. I agree with you. At my son's school they actually did talk about him last week in "preparation" to Martin Luther King day, but I don't think it made much sence to my son, because to him everybody is the same anyway. :)
