Lennon was once quoted as saying that a couple of his early tunes ("You Can't Do That", "When I Get Home") were "me trying to do Wilson Pickett."

Wow. Januray isn't even over and 3 big names already. Jan. 6th was Lou Rawls who had just turned 70 last month. Actress Shelley Winters
Age 80 +. ("The Poseiden Adventure" & many many more.)

Now,Wilson Pickett. Besides a Jim Henson as "Ernie" record my mother gave me when I was little. Pickett's,"Land Of 1000 Dances" was one of the first songs I ever owned.

It was Summer 1979 and I saw an ad on TV for "40 Golden Hits",a collection of 50s/60s pop/rock (+ 2 70s songs.) That song was one of them and despite being just before my time,I loved it! Especially the spoken,"You know I feel alright?" "Feeling pretty good y'all!" "Need somebody,help me say it one time!" "Nah,na-na-na-nah!!!" etc. I "really" love that scream too! "Woooooooaaaaahhhhh"!!!"

Just 2 years ago I bought a CD of his hits and it does include "Hey Jude",a hit for him as well as The Beatles. I'm one of many who also likes "Midnight Hour" and "Mustang Sally". Last time I saw him was in the 1998 film,"Blues Brothers 2000". He sang "864-5789" which was cool but I thought he'd do "....1000 Dances"

There were many cool R & B cats in the 60's and they all have been praised to the hilt. ...but I never really heard people talk about Wilson Pickett in the same way they did Ray Charles or Marvin Gaye. Thankfully,Wilson "is" in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

So,here's to one of the greats. Like so many in your field,you were your own one of kind. R.I.P.

And speaking of Shelley Winters, one of her ex-husbands, actor Anthony (Tony) Franciosa died today as well, from stroke age 77. Loved him with the late great Jack Soo on a little show called "Valentine's Day" back in the mid 60s.

I was a fan of Tony Franciosa. Sad to hear of his death. :(

I do know I'm still bummed about Lou Rawls. I loved his song,"You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine" and the later "Lady Love". Not to familiar with "Natural Man",I think I've heard it once.

He and Wilson are probably doing a duet somewhere now. :) "Mustang Sally,I'd bet!" :cool:

Speaking of Rawls another goood song by him are kind of rare is Dead End Street. Another great Picket song is 634-5789. Wonder if it the song caused any problems like Tommy Tutones 867-5309 were people were dialing the number asking for Jenny?
